Developers still havent figured out how to use all 6 SPEs at the same time properly; how the hell is it maxed out?

You're assuming that the 6 SPEs can be used at the same time for an extended period of time though ... Many if not most (existing) algorithms that are used in game engines are not well suited to being split into 6 or 7 seperate parts, and even those that are run into load balancing and concurrency issues which are (very) difficult to resolve; even if you resolve those issues you still have the problem of getting data into and out of your CPU and into memory at a rapid rate to take advantage of the CPU which means you suddnly are bottlenecked by your memory bandwith and bus speeds.

The SPEs may never get used to a level to give the PS3 the performance you expect

The SPEs can be split into doing different tasks. 1 can do audio, 2 can do physics calculations, 1 can do dust particles, etc.

This theory works fine for general computing, but is far less applicable for gaming that normally requires a more unified approach to programming. This is one of the primary issues with the PS3, its processor wasnt built for games like the Wii's and 360's

Ah well our dear starcraft (I love the game btw - too bad someone like that got the nick) will post anything ,that has a negative spin for the PS3 .. well, there are childish people like that and ofcourse some PS3 fans/Wii fans do the same.

So, I won't post anything in his threads again , for it's just futile to try to talk to those people.

Lol, no spin was neccessary mate. All i did was quote the article, which is from a PLAYSTATION site.

Can you please stop brining up the Amiga at the drop of a hat? You just do it all the time, especially when it has nothing to do with the thread.

Besides, none of my statements contradicted what you said since your statement falls apart on its own. Bringing up a game made by the same corporation over a decade ago, when they had different employees is hardly a valid comparison; even moreso when the platform was so different.

Oh, and maybe you didn't get the memo that Lair is a critical failure. Selling 150k comes no where close to breaking even on a $30mil project. Lair would have to sell substantially more in Europe, or have very long legs, or both, for Factor 5 to have a hope of making their money back.

I'd say 8 to 10 F5 abandons the PS3 entirely and starts making Wii games.

"Why do they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away"

Frankly, if Factor 5 sucks so bad on PS3, then they can go right ahead and make more games that suck on the Wii, and they won't cost 30 mil to make. They can make 4 games that suck for the price of one.

I'm just gonna say this one thing, and it may or may not be seen as flamebait (which certainly isn't my intention) but here goes:

Maybe... just 'maybe', the Playstation 3 isn't as powerful as Sony wants everybody to believe.

That's all.

""""There is no quote, on the record comment or anything CLOSE to Factor 5 claiming they have maxed out the PS3, we have an article with actual factor 5 quotes that say nothing resembling that and an idiot authors interperatation and alas, we have a Sony FUD thread about how the system has already reached its pinnacle.""""

As I said before ...

From what I have read most of the reviewers seemed to feel that Lair was buggy, unpolished and incomplete which implies that (even though it had been delayed several times) the game was rushed out the door without being complete. Generally a project is rushed out the door because the publisher determines that further investment in the game will not bring a healthy return. In the case of Lair I suspect that Factor 5 didn't fully understand the scope of the project, incorrectly budgeted the project, lacked resources and mismanaged other resources leading to the (eventual) failure of the project.

I suspect that if Factor 5 started on Lair 2 with what they know from Lair (and capatalizing on what they have already produced with Lair) they could produce a far better game on the same timeline and budget; if they move over to Wii development, I suspect that the smaller scale of the project would enable them to produce a much better game.

Honestly, there are few developers who haven't produced at least one awful game ... and the difference between the best and worst developers is their ability to learn from their mistakes. I wouldn't discout Factor 5 yet.

Is anyone else puzzled to see forum members (Hus) who had defended Lair as a good game suddenly turn around and bash Factor 5 and their coding ability in this discussion to dismiss a vague interpretation of paraphrased quote?

the cell is designed as a multimedia processor, it can stream media faster then any processor in the world, thats why folding@home is fast as hell, the world's fastest super computer has 75 cell processors in it, and all IBM Blade servers with it in them run fast. Gaming is nothing more then specialised media.
