Forums - Sales - PS3 passes the GameCube!

A lot of people doubted the PS3 very early on tbh. Not talking about this site, but there was a poll on another forum late 2006/early 2007 asking would the PS3 pass 10 million, most people voted no. But I dont know, they probably just idiots.

But it doesnt really matter, the PS3 IS doing well, its just when you compare it to the other 2 its not doing so well, but it is right behind the 360 at double the price, Sony needs to announce it for $300 at E3 to spark things up.

It was doing sub 100k NPD's. That's below 25k/week. Japanese sales were bleak as well (below 10k/week).

If Sony hadn't slashed the price by 200$ there wouldn't be a ps3 now.

Slowly but steady. I thought PS3 had a easy chance surpassing 360 a few months back but the more time that goes by it looks less and less possible.

I wonder what the life time sales will be. If they can drop it to $200 down the road I bet it can hit 60 million.

But what I find amazing, is how Sony started this gen, and how far they've come, they're easily going to beat the 2 consoles that came in 2nd and 3rd from last gen, with a console of $400. That is whats so amazing

Hmmm.... I disagree. I think everyone assumed the PS3 would dominate the market no matter the price. Granted MS and Nintendo wouldn't have been as successful at this price but the PS3 is still dead last in this gen. That's more amazing to me.

Perhaps the PS3 is doing well but if definitely isn't living upto the expectations Sony had hoped. The other is its competition... so yeah all of its competition is doing better.

Eitherway the $400 price is keeping more people from buying the console but at $300 Sony will lose money. Which is best for Sony?

Got that right...a system that was released for $600 and now $400 in this shitty economy, and now passing GC, would be considered a success only if it didn´t have the name 'Playstation', and wasn´t the successor to the most successful home console of all time.

Making some money instead of eating years of profits would help as well.

Kind-of stinks since GC has quite a few better games than PS3 has atm and it went un-noticed. Even though PS3 is still young I'm just saying.

Hurted my eyes...

Nintendo IPs? AGAIN?

They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts

So the Xbox is next to be overtaken, then the N64, then the SNES, then the NES. Which it should do with ease. And the PS1 after those but I'm unsure about that one.

lol, it will do eventually. I think if they cut it to $300 in this year, they could easily get to around 40 million, but it will just keep getting cut - the pressures on Sony.

wow you really think it can do 19 million in 8 months .....

must have meant 30 milliom, and thats a stretch in itself.

Do you realize the NES has shipped over 62 million? There's no way the PS3 will pass it "with ease", if at all.

Do you seriously doubt it will eventually make money for Sony? We're only 2 and a half years in its life.

Sales are immaterial from that point of view until the hardware costs decrease bringing a per sale profit (this summer they'll move to 45nm chips) and software sales are going well proportionally to the install base. And they could have gone with a cheaper hardware and more rushed launch, but they wouldnt have been able to push the BluRay as they did.

So basically, what do you think Sony's expectations or hopes were? Selling 3 times as many consoles in the same time and lose a few billion dollars more on the hardware? Good luck making that back in software sales during the first two years of life of a console.
