Forums - Sony - Don't you think Sony First party studios spend too much time & money on ...

Nope I don't think so. These engines will prove viable through the years to come and can be used over and over for sequels or entirely new IPs.

I rather see 6 different engines bringing something new to the table than 6 games using the Unreal 3 engine. Although Epic was very smart to do this.

FootballFan - "GT has never been bigger than Halo. Now do a comparison between the two attach ratios and watch GT get stomped by Halo. Reach will sell 5 million more than GT5. Quote me on it."

But have made such wonderful games, and undoubtedly they will use those engines for others games to come

But my point is that making an engine for 3 - 4 game is not enough.. the power of scale of economies cannot apply here.

I think it can't be helped with a new console with new architecture. They have to figure out how to use the PS3 best and are approaching it from different angles. I suspect some of these engines will be left behind over the coming years. I should know, 'cause I'm a pre-school teacher, and we know our shit.

Sony must know what they're doing. And they get paid to consider such things. We're not.

As far as i remember engine for Epic or Capcom cost around 10-20 mln.,
and as for Capcom,
they released:

Dead Rising - 1st year
Lost Planet - 2nd year
Devil May Cry 4 - 2nd year
Resident Evil 5 - 3rd year

not sure about SF IV, - 3rd year
but also improved version of MT Framework 2.0 is used for:
Lost Planet 2 - 4th year
and probably Dead Rising 2. - 4th year

So, that already 2-5 games released in 3 years and 2 more incoming.

I think, in near 2-3 years we will see MUCH more games using those Sony exclusive game Engines. =)

PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

So we can either have all games on an old and slow engine, or several games spread out across multiple engines, each engine optimized for that specific game allowing for best possible performance.......

Multiple engines for me please.

I think there doing fine and as many have pointed out these engines will probably be re-used for future 1st party games.I mean Insomniac has pushed out what 5 games from one engine? ND has one game out and another in the pipeline? and Im pretty sure that Sucker Punch's next game will re-use the inFamous engine.

Besides I'm tired of most games looking alike and sharing the same problems because they use the same engine. Please no more UE3 games please I've had enough

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I think it makes good business sense provided the engines they build are viable to be used by other developers on the platform. We don't know quite how good some of these engines are until they're in the hands of other developers, a good engine is very flexible for other devs to work with when licensed.

UE3 games are fine if work is put into getting the most from the engine, obviously this hasn't always been the case.

This is the best thing they could be spending time and money on. It gives every game its own personallity, and feel. Useing the same engine over and over for every game was one of the things I hated most about PS2. Everything was built on Renderware, and it all look the same. To me, Sony's model of each team building their own engine, while all teams share tech is the best in the buisness.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.
