From Game informer's Captivate 09 impressions:

"Aside from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and the PSP download-only fighter Fate/unlimited codes, there wasn’t much on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live Arcade fronts"

Update:

From Capcom's official site - http://www.capcom-unity.com/s-kill/blog/2009/04/28/captivate_09_fateunlimited_codes

Fate/unlimited codes is a bit of secret here in the West, but hopefully not for too long. Coming from Japanese arcades and developed by the now well-known Tatsunoko vs Capcom team, Fate beautifully combines Soul Calibur weapon-based combat with the freedom and unrestrained fun of a Marvel vs Capcom-style game. Fate also combines the easy pick-up-and-play style of those games, so anyone can sit down and start having fun right away. You've got air-combos, dashing, and crazily different characters, and with the PSP, it's all in the palm of your hand.

CAPCOM®’S Fate/unlimited codes COMES AS A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD TO
PSP® SYSTEM THIS SUMMER

Digital Distribution Brings the Fight of the Century to the Palm of Your Hand!

SAN MATEO, Calif. — April 28, 2009 Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that a fighting game, Fate/unlimited codes, is scheduled for release in North America in Summer 2009. This exciting PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system title will only be available for sale via the PlayStation®Store on the PSP system and Media Manager Pro for the PSP system. Fate/unlimited codes is rated T for Teen by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) and will be available this summer for $29.99.

Based on the PC and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system visual novel ‘Fate/stay night,’ Fate/unlimited codes takes place in a local town in Japan where 7 pairs of ‘Masters’ and ‘Servants’ compete for the ‘Holy Grail’ that will grant them any wish. This compelling combat experience for the PSP system features a deep roster of characters and unique fighting moves, while employing a fast-paced, weapons-based fighting system that is sure to meet any Capcom fans highest expectations.

The original Arcade version has been greatly updated for the PSP system, and designed in such a way so that anyone can pull-off a speedy action move with the most basic fighting game controls. Special attacks are easy to pull off as well, making this one of those rare fighting games that almost anyone can jump into and become a pro at.

For those feeling confident enough to take on some competition, Fate/unlimited codes supports local wireless play on the PSP system, allowing two players to duke it out wirelessly. Additionally, the game has dozens of unlockable secrets, including alternate costumes, 250 plus missions and mini-games. Eighting, the development team that brought you Tatsunoko vs. Capcom now brings this exciting game to the PSP system.

IGN's preview is up:

April 28, 2009 - How often do people in America get the opportunity to play a fighting game based on a series of adult-themed anime and manga? Not often enough, I say. Capcom is heeding the call and bringing Fate/unlimited codes, a game based on the PC and PS2 visual novel Fate/stay night, to North America. This game is a port of a popular arcade release with plenty of new bells and whistles to keep the handheld gamer happy, including local wireless play for two and unlockable extras. Capcom recently gave us the opportunity to sit down and have a few rounds with Fate to see what all the fuss has been about overseas.

Fate features 17 characters ranging from innocent little schoolgirls to the hulking and aptly named Berserker. Each carries a weapon, has its own unique ability and controls in roughly the same fashion. Most of the basic attacks require combinations of back and forward directional presses, followed by an attack. The specials are typically down-to-forward rolls capped with a strong attack. The system isn't anything fighting games haven't seen before, which makes this an easy game to pick up and start dishing out damage.

The story goes that each is fighting for the Holy Grail, an item that will grant any wish. You can play through the arcade mode to follow each character's path and see if they find this mythical item. Play through the arcade mode with each character and you'll unlock new character art, videos, and alternate costumes. Some of these costumes have been made specifically for the PSP version.

If the story mode isn't your cup of tea, there's also a mission mode where specific tasks must be performed (typically requiring players to meet certain conditions or perform a specific move during battle). There is the standard versus quick play option, but if you just want to look you can boot up spectator mode and watch your favorite fighters duke it out without your help

Fate will make its way to North America this summer, but will only be available as a digital download through the Media Manager Pro or the PlayStation Store. The development duties are being handeled by Eighting, the same group that worked on Tatsunkoko vs. Capcom. It has been rated T for Teen by the ESRB and will have a price tag of $29.99.

If 'download only' route means we'll be getting more quirky JP games like this, then I'm all for it.

2D fighter Fate/Unlimited Codes follows in the footsteps of Patapon 2 in bypassing UMD

Following Sony’s revelation earlier this month that it is to release upcoming PSP sequel Patapon 2 in digital form only in North America, Capcom has now joined the party by announcing a non-UMD PSP title of its own.

GameSpot reports that Capcom will release 2D fighter Fate/Unlimited Codes on PSN later this year. It’s based on a 2008 arcade and PS2 outing and stems from interactive graphic novel Fate/Stay Night.

Whether or not the title would have received a boxed release in the West is open to debate – but if not, then would a digital-only future for the PSP allow publishers to be more brave with their publishing decisions?

Fate/Unlimited Codes will cost $29.99 in North America. There’s no word yet on whether the game will make it to Europe – be it in a box or over the digital tubes.

same here. I've heard some pretty good things about Fate/Unlimited. From the images I've seen of it, the game looks pretty good.

I'm pumped. I hope for more of these kinda games to release here. Those Bleach fighters, Brandish, Macross Ace Frontier. *drool*

Basara is another anime fighter? Or is it a RPG?
