You're not really afraid of something similar to the Spanish flu outbreak? If my memory serves me correct (please correct me if I'm wrong), with the influenza virus, you are capable of transmitting it to another human 8-12 hours after you have contracted the virus. You will then be in an highly contagious time period for the next 12 hours before finally showing initial symptoms. After you start to show symptoms you could have given the virus to several people without even knowing it.
Also, some estimate for the spanish flu put the death toll close to 100 million people world wide (in the 2 or 3 years it was around), with an estimated 40% death rate in young adults.
Now this current flu outbreak isn't sounding as serious as the spanish flu outbreak, but with the spead that virus evolve and almost freely swap genetic material would put the possibility of this strain mutating into something deadly at something >0%.
There isn't anything to fear right now, but very serious problems can occur if the divergent strains mix together creating a very deadly version.
