Haha no I'm sure you aren't the only one. If you ever want to play FF games, I recommend you start with FFVI. |
I agree with naznatips; FFVI is the second best FF IMO. Which makes me wonde, naznatips, you really didn't like FFVII? I agree FFI-VI style was my preference as well but FFVII really pulled me in it's fantastic world, amazing battles, etc. What was it in particular you didn't like about FFVII? |
Well, I really shouldn't say don't like. I don't dislike the other FF games, they just don't feel as special to me. They are all okay/good games (except FFXII...), but they don't use the style that charmed me into FF in the first place. My personal complaints about FFVII are:
1) The change in style from fantasy to sci-fi. Environments became much less colorful and much more dreary and dark. The graphics in the game were pretty bad too. I know FFVII's 3D sprites were revolutionary... but you have to admit the 2D ones from FFVI looked a lot better than the Legos you played through FFVII as. I shouldn't have to be watching a cutscene to see any emotion from the characters I'm using.
2) The personalities of the characters. I have never been a fan of the dark gothic "cool" character attitude. I mean look at Cloud who spent most of the game chronically depressed, then look at Zidane or Terra with really bright and colorful personalities.
3) Then you have Sephiroth... I had just finished playing FFVI when I played FFVII for the first time. FFVI btw has my favorite villain of all time: Kefka. His crazy laugh and awesome quotes really just made me love him. After Kefka, Sephiroth felt empty as a villain (despite having badass theme music). Jenova was a better villain than him... I mean, his story was ridiculous. A few Jenova cells made him unbelievably strong, and stronger than Jenova herself... uh what? As a side note I'm actually of the opinion Jenova was stronger and she was controlling him the whole game until she was killed. Not to mention Sephiroth was perfectly sane before discovering he was genetically engineered, then he magically goes "okay, I'll be crazy now." Hopefully Crisis Core will explain that better...
4) FFVII was really badly translated. It was full of typoes and translation errors. It's plot was also pretty shabby, and often misinterpreted. Some people think Sephiroth was the primary villain of the game, but I'm of the opinion that Jenova was. Sephiroth spent the entire game in the Northern Crater (frozen most of the time). Jenova is certainly the one that killed Aeris (while disguised as Seph), and she is the one you chased throughout most of the game. I can link you to an entire page of evidence that shows Jenova is the primary villain if you want.
Those are my main issues. Again, it wasn't a bad game... it just didn't feel like the Final Fantasy that I had grown up with. VI, IX, and IV are my top favorites. I could talk about those 3 games for hours lol.
