Since it has Wi-Fi, it won't be gimped like the 20GB was. Good stuff. This should sell very well. Maybe it'll drop in price even further for MGS4, etc.
Let's just hope Sony keeps dropping the price every chance they get until it's at least the price of the premium 360. As long as they break even on the manufacturing of these units from here on out, they should be able to sell enough of these suckers so that they'll make enough back on games sales to become profitable.
I'm sure they'll lose a good bit on every 40GB at first, but they'll break even on them soon enough. As long as they don't get complacent and try to make a profit on the actual systems sold, they should manage to price match the 360 eventually and start gaining ground on MS.
Also, a price drop for a territory other than NA would probably help, too. Who knows when they'll actually get around to doing that though...
| leo-j said: I wish this was true, a 40gb ps3 this december with all the features of the 80gb would do something amazing. The $399.99 price early next year or this year is the only thing that keeps me on with the mentality of ps3 being on top at the end of the generation. |
So you are saying if the PS3 does not get a $399.99 price till early next year it cannot win this generation ??? What about Kingdom Hearts and FFIII ???

Yeah, it's really likely that they'll take an item they're selling for $600, swap one component for another one that's $5 cheaper and mark it down to $400.
Let's set this straight: there is virtually no cost reduction to be gained by replacing the 80GB hard drive with a smaller one. In order for Sony to reduce the price on the PS3 by $200 (which is essentially what this comes down to, since the 80GB unit is slightly cheaper to produce than the 60GB unit), they have to either take a bigger loss or get the Bluray drives and Cells for cheaper.
I'd say that chances are this is just a new revision of the 80GB model.
@Non
If they dont release a $399.99 console soon then yep it might be too late for them.

You must be picky.
This wouldnt make sense since that one guy working for Sony confirmed the 80GB would be down to $399 in March... Do they have to contact the FCC with every price drop? Maybe they are going to lower the 80GB's price and put in a 100GB HDD SKU.

Having read all the documents... damn that was dull... I can't find any mention of the difference between this and the current model except for:
As for the differences between Model CECHG01 and the original model CECHA01 please see "Point of Difference".
Anyone find this Point of Difference, they mention?
Winbane,
Nice list of games. The PS3 is really doing a great job working on it's library. 21 games over 80% is pretty good for right now.
Leo-J,
The PS3 isn't going to win anything with a 399.99$ price. It doesn't matter anyway, as the PS3 already has good 3rd party support.
