If it's not broken (and IMO best in its category - unless you count SSBB) why mess it up?

But maybe it is broken. A series like this should be getting stronger, especially as the install base on the PS2 went up. Maybe it was because of Soul Caliber and Dead or Alive, but this game has obviously lost some appeal with gamers. Again, I'm not trying to troll this topic or be a hater. I love this game, but I bought tekken 4 and just thought...meh. Tekken 5 didn't seem any diiferent...and Tekken 6 looks just the same. Time for a reboot is all I'm saying. Maybe Tekken vs. Soul Caliber would be cool.

Those figures are wrong.  According to Wikipedia, Tekken 5 sold 4.3 mil., which makes much more sense than 1.3 mil., especially considering how much better the game was than Tekken 4.

Tekken is traditionally the most popular fighting series after SSB (and SF, if you go back that far) and this is generally reflected in sales.

I find that only VGchartz's console numbers are worth trusting.  Software sales that predate the creation of the website can be horribly wrong at times.   Hell, there are many games that aren't even listed on this site, some as well known as Ninja Gaiden.

I have always thought tekken was the sort of game you only needed to buy one game a generation. Tekken 3 was one of the best games on the PS1 so its the only tekken game i have, dont need another one. 2 generations on I might pick this game up. not a must have though.

That is the exact reason why GT3 sold much more than GT4.  You get the first one for the "WOW" factor that comes with the updated visuals, and then you are content for the rest of the generation.  That's also the reason why I expect GT5 to outsell GT4.

well i don't really want to derail this thread but fighting games in general since after the dreamcast have not changed much at all. The entire genre of fighting games needs an overahaul.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Always hated Tekken. Give me Soul Calibre or DOA any day.

Fighting games in general have not progressed at all over the last 5 years (if not longer).

Watch this flunk.

I hope namco implies a half decent netcode/online interface in Tekken 6.

Not only does the lag make it unplayable online, but the matchmaking for Tekken 5: DROnline is absolute trash.  Is this Namco or PS3's fault?

The matchmaking is sooooo primative that I cant even find the player I want to play.

crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.

i miss the days when fighting games were fresh and new great concepts were coming out all the time. From street fighter to mortal kombat, to killer instinct, to street figher alpha to marvel super heroes to bushido blade.

What have we had in the last 5 years? nothing but sequals to the same games we were playing more than 5 years ago. IMO dreamcast was the last hurrah with games like street fighter alpha 3, soul calibur, street fighter 3, and marvel vs capcom 2

forgot to mention power stone

Crazy that the numbers would be that off.  I don't base my opinion on those numbers that the game (for me) needs a reboot.  After routso mentioned the game wasn't broken I went to the charts and was surprised at what I saw.  I will note, however, that Wikipedia showed no citation for those figures.

Oh, I know what you mean about the reboot.

I just felt the need to point out that the series is still very popular. It bugs me that this game so often gets ignored as a heavy hitter for the ps3 next year. Such a high seller should help move consoles almost as much as MGS4, imo.

As to the source of the numbers, I'd assume they're from the official Tekken site, but since the site is entirely in Japanese, I can't confirm this.

Also, there were some new screenshots put up on the official site earlier this month. Here's one:

Those are some very high-poly character models! How can people say this looks worse than DoA4, VF5, and SC4? This looks better, at least to me (WAY better than DoA and VF). Although, I do think SC4 has much better lighting than any other fighter to date.
