Not taking up the offer is a perfectly legitimate choice. But you also have the creative freedom of a blank slate. The space is yours any time you want to avail yourself of it, there's not time limit.
Of course if I happen to be forced in to giving over sig control to someone else for some other reason then you'd have to wait.
