Forums - Gaming - Gears2 Single-Player Horde Mode is Wild... and Great for Training

This is how I finished Horde. I played the first 40 or so waves with other people, but then they bailed on me and I finished the rest by myself. On Day One, if you hide in the upstairs section (behind that back section by the sniper/torque bow), in the very middle of that low wall, they can't jump over and you can just unload shotgun and assault rifle rounds from cover.

That's exactly how I've made it to wave 47.  lol!  I've tried a number of other maps, but nothing else comes close to that location as far as being defensible.

But only the big guys can't make it over that wall, i.e. - boomers, maulers, flamers, butchers, grinders.  When the difficulty starts ratcheting up, I try and kill a mauler to get his shield, and then plant it close to the corner so I can blind/sharp shoot over that little wall.  It's usually the Kantus that kill me now, as they tend to throw poison smoke grenades while I'm pinned down by a ginder.

One technique I'm trying (particularly considering the amount of ammo required to kill a grub on wave 47) is to hop back over the wall grab a grinder, run past the mauler shield I've stuck in the walkway, then crouch behind the second wall of the corner and "peek out" to take down anything that comes up the stairs onto the walkway.  The biggest weakness with this technique is my right side is exposed to opponents in certain locations downstairs.  But other than that, it works well.

No... it was hard enough with 3 people.... though I did get to wave 30 with 2 (inc me)

I will be getting back to horde this summer, need to get up to that 1425 mark

It is fantastic game mode, so much better than that other crap that they served up, filled with balance and lag issues

At first I thought it was going to be impossible alone... but as time went on, I starting trying new approaches (best headshot techniques, best Mauler shield placement, best weapons against each foe type, which foes to kill first when being overrun, etc.) and found that sure enough, the right combination of skill and approach could make a world of difference.

By the way, everytime I log into my profile (crumas), I look to see if you're online, but you never are.  I'm guessing you're not in the US...

Well I haven't played my Xbox for about 2 months, and I don't have gold at the moment... But in mid-June, after my exams, I am going to get gold, a tonne of points and several games, and just play and play and play, I really want that 100% in Gears of War, and I am praying they don't add any more content on after this, but I am pretty sure they will to get to a nice round number (probably 1750)

It's good for training your campaign skills, but to really become good at multiplayer, it requires learning how to effectively blindfire the shotgun.

Depends to some degree.  When playing every-man-for-himself, reflexive shooting skills are a must.  When playing on a team, there are specific approaches other than just reflexive shooting that can be useful.

I look forward to seeing you online in June.
