Greetings everyone!
Earlier this week, I received my copy of Super Mario RPG, a game which I never had the chance of buying, since it was never released in Europe. I bought it at a fairly decent price, considering that on eBay, it can reach exorbitating prices quite easily - the last one I tried to bought, was sold for over 60 Euros...
Anyway, business aside, I need to ask something very important.
My Super Mario RPG is Japanese - and the instruction manual is beautiful, even though I understand about 1% of it. Obviously, I cannot play it on my European SNES, which outputs a 50hz signal.
BUT - I own an American SNES, more specifically, a SNES Junior, which I bought a few months ago, precisely to play some games which were never released in Europe - like Mario RPG - or which were "seriously wounded" in the PAL conversion.
As you know, the difference between an American SNES and a Japanese Super Famicom is entirely physical - the cart slot is different to prevent japanese SFC games from fitting in - since there are no technical differences between the two and Japanese SFC games can run on an American SNES, and vice-versa, if the physical obstacles are absent.
Now, what I want to know is: can I use any converter/adaptor to play the Japanese Mario RPG on my American SNES? I know that Mario RPG contains an anti-import chip - I don't know how it works, but it probably has a higher speed than the import carts which were available in 1996. BUT I don't know if this import chip was only intended for the American carts of Mario RPG, since they are much more likely to end up on a European SNES than a Japanese cart.
However, if the converter is only doing a PHYSICAL job, not a TECHNICAL job, maybe the cart's chip will not realize that I'm trying to play it on a non-native console, am I right? Supposing that the Japanese cart has that "cynical chip".
So this is mostly directed to users in the US who own a SNES and a Japanese Mario RPG cart, but virtually anyone who has any information on this will be welcome.
I'm not very willing to cut off those 4 plastic parts within the cart slot, since it was not very easy to find and buy that console and I don't want to accidentaly ruin it. However, if there is no other way, I might do that.
