Forums - Microsoft - Star Ocean 4 lock ups!!!!

Anyone having this problem?  Sometimes at the end of a battle when a character does their little victory dance, my game will freeze up.  Of course, this almost always happens after I've played for about 2 hours without hitting a save point.  (For those of you who are tempted to suggest that I save more often, Star Ocean 4 does not lend itself well to that tactic.  You can't just save whenever you want.)  The game also freezes if I am down to my last party member in a battle and try to switch to that character.  In other words, if I lose a boss battle, the game is inevitably going to lock up.  I should also mention, this is NOT a hardware issue.  My 360 never locks up except for this game, and I have read in several other forums that people are having the same exact issues I'm having on this title.  What I have yet to find out is if anyone knows a way to recover from these crashes.

It has been suggested on other forums that creating a new save spot and installing the discs to your hard drive will prevent this from happening.  I have discs 2 and 3 installed on my hard drive and create a new save spot almost every time I start the game.  The error still occurs.  Has anyone yet figured out a way to eliminate this issue on SO4?  Or better yet, does anyone know of a patch coming out that will remedy the situation?

In my opinion, this is a fatal flaw of this game.  I was really enjoying it and really looking forward to seeing how it all ends, but at this point I have no choice other than to put the game down until a patch comes out.  A game I used to think of as an 8 or 9 out of 10 is now a 1 out of 10 because its bugs are preventing me from finishing it.  It is such a waste of my gaming time to have to go back and replay 2 or 3 hours worth of battles just because the game is broken.

sorry your having problems, I've got hours and hours on mine and its never frozen once. but i have read that people that was having freezing problems, that when they started playing the game from the disc in 720P instead of 1080P can reduce freezing or stop the freezing for some.

try clearing the HDD cashe.

gamefaqs has a posting on this. again there suggesting
(As for the crashes/freeze, it was told that NOT installing the game and playing at native res (720p) was a big help.)

Eh, well you've done about all you can do.

The game freezes all the time. The problem is even worse without them installed and in Disc 2 on. It's frozen on me three times.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

i love trying to solve problems for some reason, but anyway read more than one post where hooking up and using component and not HDMI has fixes some people's freezing.

some that has 2 360's and have freezing on one of them, and not a single problem on the other one.

doesn't look like its a particular drive causing it do to the fact some are installing it and it fixes the problem, then some find the fix by playing off the disk drive.

some find a particular character in the battle group to be the problem. once removed the freezing stopped.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I am going to try the 720 idea when I get home tonight and see if that works. (Of course I'll probably THINK it works and then right when I get comfortable again it will freeze. :) )

Right now I have discs 2 and 3 installed on my hard drive. The 360 is connected to my HDTV via component cables, not HDMI. I guess I will uninstall both discs tonight, force 720p from my 360, and pray that it works. I think I am really close to the end of the game at this point.

I didn't have to work until 11:30 this morning, so I got up at 7:30 and started up a game of SO4. I played for two straight hours without saving (didn't want to go all the way back to the last save point and have to fight everything again) and then the game crashed. I was heartbroken. I was just about to hit level 80 on all of my active party members and I think I'm about to finish the main story.

If the 720 thing doesn't work for me, I will be shelfing this game permanently until there's a patch--if there ever is one.

It's never frozen up on me but I have the entire game installed on the HDD. I hate to say it but your 360 maybe nearing an RROD. Mine froze often just before a RROD.

Hopefully it's just a saved game issue like you stated above.

Same here It would freeze in every cut scence of Lost Odyssey before it died on me...

Former something....

Saints Row 2 has a habit of freezing up on me. That is about the only time I have run into frequent lock ups.

So far, everything points to this not being the case.  Before today I hadn't played Star Ocean in a few weeks, and nothing else is freezing up on me.  I have had Star Ocean since it launched, and since that day, it's the only game I own that ever freezes up on my 360.  It never froze up on disc 1, only 2 and 3.

The other thing is that it's not even that often.  It usually happens about once a week, and it's always in the same place--right as you win a battle.  This is consistent with everything I've read on the internet about this game--everyone that has the freezing seems to have it in the exact same place.

I think all that's truly needed here is a patch.  But I have heard that Tri Ace isn't real big on patching their games.
