Forums - Gaming - The square enix formula: change or fail.

Square Enix. Undisputedly on of the most prominent game publishers and developers of all time. There unique style of thr rpg have barely changed since there NES days. Strong cast of character. Unforgettable boos fights. Incrdible turn based combat. And some of the best and most revolutionary presentation values and graphics in the gaming world. But something is wrong over at Square Enix. And here is what I think it is.

Going into the playstation 2 ear. Square was renowned for there incrdible quality games. Final fantasies 7, 8 and 9 touted as works of genious. They had to deliver this generation. And they did. Final fantasy 10 is believed by some fans to be the best in the series. It truely was a stellar game. Then there was final fantasy 10-2. Another critically acclaimed game. But people were starting to make comparisons with ff7. Most people agreeing that ff10 was no where near as good. Square tried to change there style with ff11 and I bilieve they went horribly wrong. An MMO? on the ps2???? and its final fantasy!?!?! Then, after that fiasco. They decide to make a very MMO-esque game called FF12 which many people claim is one of the worst final fantasy game. The game was still good. But not up to the high standard people were used to.

Then came square Enix's true faliure theis generation. With no Final Fantasy games released this far into the generation. It is Square Enix's slowest generation ever for final fantasy games. Of course Square had a brilliant idea. To make buggy, sub par games like infinite undiscovery and Last Remnat, using the same, old , tired character develpoment and settings. Mixing that with bugs and generic JRPG graphics. There were a few glimmers of hope. The World Ends With you being on of Square ENix's greatest games in the past 5 or so years. With raved reviews. Game of the year awards. And phenominal sales for the type of game it was. The World Ends With You prove that Square still has some magic left in them. Sure Final fantasy 13 is coming in one year. But hen what. Do we wait another 5 year for ff14? And get a bunch of sub par games again? If so, we might see the fall from the top of video games most favourite publisher lists. If it continues on this path of mediocraty.

I heard people, despite the reviews, praising LR and other JRPGs. I'm starting to lose so much trust in the reviews now, although I don't believe it's a good game either. Pretty much I'll have to play it to judge it at this point.

Well it wasn't really in question for me at least, but this thread definitely confirmed that most of the people whining about Square Enix don't actually know what they're talking about.

I have to ask though, are you a Square Enix fan or a Final Fantasy fan? A lot of your rant revolved around FF13 and the possible gap between it and FF14. What about SaGa? Chrono? Mana? Dragon Quest? ActRaiser? Soul Blazer?

I think you should play Infinite Discovery and The Last Remnant before talking about them. Also, I believe Squeenix was the publisher for Infinite Undiscovery it was actually made by Tri-ace (star ocean series) .

the last remnant is not final fantasy bu tit is not trying to be final fantasy either. Wishing it were so is like saying I want xenogears to be another final fantasy. It is a different series.

i tried not to use the words i or me. i have dont think last remnant is awful just compared to someof there other/older stuff it falls short of what i expect from square enix. I now that it is a little harsh i was mainly going by what other people though and reviewers, it's probably pretty clear by my post of that. @ claude i ment recent, crono isn't exactly recent. mana isn't that great anymore, dragon quest is good but i think we need that new ds entry. I know my post sounded kinda bitter. But I just want my epics like my ff and my cronos and my console DQ's back.

Like it's been already said, you dont know what you are talking about. Infinite Undiscovery is not a game by Square-Enix. The Last Remnant is by the developers of SaGa, and I guess I would be spot on if I said that you havent played either SaGa or TLR.

Now I have played TLR on both 360 and PC and the 360 version is a bucket of over-reaching buggy cr*p. The PC version, however, is an excellent game and does the IP proud.

There are some inaccuracies, but look at the bigger picture:

If you look at the commercial success of the games he mentioned compared to that of Square Enix past, is he really so wrong? Cut him some slack, he has >100 posts.

Don't tell him he knows nothing.

I downloaded the demo on steam and found a lot of the commands were still set for the X-box 360 controller instead of the keyboard. Have they fixed that or will I need to buy a 360 controller if I want to play it and know what button I need to press?

You can change that in options even in the demo.
