Forums - Sony - Why does Sony refuse to advertise properly?

When the PS2 was king, Sony didn't need to advertise at all, they were on top of the world and nothing could stop them (so it seemed).  So why is Sony refusing to advertise now?   If you ask me, Sony should start some sort of advertising campaign like Apple has.  Apple being a much smaller company than M$ has gained marketshare for some time now all because it knows how to advertise properly.

Sony has had problems this entire generation (so far) with advertising.    My question is why?   Some people think its because of the financial crisis or that because Sony is a smaller company and they don't have the money to advertise.  I think that is all BS.  They should be advertising stuff as much as possible.   Pay for a respected firm who knows how to draw in potential customers instead of confusing them like they do with the current commercials.

If Sony would have spent some money and had KZ2 advertised half as well as Halo 3 they would have sold 5x more copies of the game.  And its really sad to me that they refuse to do this.  Is it because they still have a PS2 complex?

Apple has proven that a smaller company can compete with a Goliath.  And even M$ has acknowledged their add campaigns by trying to counter them.  Until something is done by Sony on this front, don't expect a major turn around for Sony, even with a midsized price drop.

They used to advertise like crazy back with the ps2, and real good ads as well. At the beginning the PS3 had tremendous amount of ads, and then they all stopped.

In japan SCEJ is doing an amazing job at advertising, you cant say the same about SCEE and SCEA.

I honestly don't remember the PS2 being advertised that much. I thought it was mostly the 3rd party titles that did that. I guess i could be wrong though.

KZ2 is advertised much more on TV then Halo3 ever was. The KZ2 ads are still running all the time during major Tv shows and just about ever channel i watch. LBP was advertised very much aswell, and R2 had a massive ad campaign.

Sony advertises lots. Just not much on TV. I went to a hockey game, they have lots of Sony advertisements. Game pause, a Killzone 2 commercial is played. They have a Playstation booth in one section with PS3's. Lots of bus stops have Resistance Retribution posters. I see Sony stuff in many places, just not some much on TV.

Come on dude, I love Halo3 but you can't sit there and say KZ2 is advertised anywhere near as much as halo3 was.  It was advertised on nearly every product that a young gamer could imagine, and many more times a day.  For gods sake it even had its own brand of MT. Dew.

While I do agree the KZ2 adds are still running ( a decent amount  even ) they aren't as flashy or "catchy" as halo 3's. ( as an example) or even the original  Gears of war.  Honestly, when H3's adds were out I wanted to see what the next one would be before it aired.  This is the type of thing that Sony should be working on.  Not just on tv adds but as an advertising camaign that leaves you wanting to see more.

I like KZ2 but does that bullet add make you want to see more?  It just doesn't do it for me I guess.

Sony does advertise a ton -- and they don't do it all on TV. They do a lot of sporting event advertising, etc.

The thing with the Apple / MS comparison isn't really apt because you get a completely different experience using OS X vs using Windows. Whereas the PS3 and Xbox 360 are similarly powered gaming toys that play very many of the same games in almost the exact same way. Except one is much cheaper than the other.

I think they are doing a good job and know what they are doing...

Microsoft worked out MUCH better marketing promotions for Halo 3 than Sony did for Killzone 2. it is likely that Halo has a greater cultural buzz so other products want to be around it. Killzone 2 is pretty much a new IP, considering how irrelevant the original Killzone was.

I have actually pondered this same question. It could be that Sony is used to being top dog and coming from the position of being on top, which doesn't work at this time. They try to do differently, like the other choice that is cool for being different (Sega scream), and they undermine their perceived position of dominance (same with showing challenger contrast ads). Also, I think Sony has problems communicating their value proposition so people would want to buy it. The value proposition for the PS3 is all over the map, and hard to have a single message to get across.

I have seen TV ads. Sony pushes their baseball game now. It is a good ad actually.
