Forums - Nintendo - Take Two-Gamestop: GTA: Chinatown Wars sales are exceeding our expectations

B..... But the NPD!!!!!!

The game's publisher, Take Two Interactive, doesn't publicly state that there's a problem. "We're confident in the game, and we think it has long-term potential for success," company spokesman Alan Lewis told MTV News. "We're trying to pioneer mature games on the platform."

The nation's biggest gaming retail chain expressed confidence in the title. " 'GTA: Chinatown Wars' is exceeding our expectations and illustrating the power of the franchise on a new platform," GameStop spokesman Chris Olivera said in an e-mail to MTV News. "We've seen a solid lift in sales of 'Chinatown Wars' following the launch of the DSi and believe that the product will continue to enjoy a long life at our stores as the buzz around the new handheld gaming experience continues to grow." Nintendo's DSi model of the DS platform was released a day after NPD's sales-tracking window for March.

i still need to pick this game up. i will after the semester is over :)

I'm Sorry but I'm calling bullshit! How the hell can Take-Two say that GTA CW exceeded their expectations? Its a GTA game on a userbase of over 100M and it failed to break 100k in a month in America? and you call that "Exceeding your expectations?" Bull

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

^^^take two didn't say that read it again

Well they didn't say that Gamestop did.  And it's hard to call bull on Take-Two.  If they think the game is doing well and will do well who better to know that then the guys selling them to the retailers.

So basically, Take 2 is saying the same thing as many of the Nintendo fans on this site.

"It will have legs!"

A lot of developers for Nintendo platforms seem to be satisfied with sales that many of us view as bad, while high selling games like Mirror's Edge and Dead Space resulted in EA losing millions of dollars. Could the difference in budgets between the DS/Wii and the HD consoles be bigger than we thought?

well people seemed happy with the VGchartz numbers, and we only overtracked it by around 20k. i think it could chart even higher next month with DSi launch, longer selling period and drop off of platinum

it's possible. Or they are all liars...

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

You should have read another posting by "The Source" about this. It explains it very well. The breakdown however is different than what your cherry picking at. In regards to demographic audience the game is off to a reasonable start. See the big failing is that your assuming that 100M users are you. They aren't you. Yes there are more users than say the PSP which is the next most relevent machine, but you need to realize that expanded audience taste is different. Think of it this way. PS3 and 360 are now the weeded out and the cream of the crop in regards to traditional gamers. This means that games like GTA4 will percentagly do really well, because GTA4 is traditional game. Where as DS and Wii have a reasonably size of traditional games + a massive new audience. The new audience takes time to get into the new games. They eventually bridge the gap, but only up to what they feel comfortable with.

As for why the starting sells are in not GTA4 sales, well that's easy. Did you buy it? did you ever expect the DS to get a GTA game? do you like top down looking games? Would you buy GTACW and a DS if you found the game exceedingly fun after playing a friends version?. Then ask that same question to all your friends and others who play PS3, PSP and 360 mostly.

Simply put the GTA core players, do not have a DS, are biased against the DS, are focused on the 3rd person view not the 2d/3d.

So GTA is doing well in the fact that it's breaking into new grounds. Among GTACW owners this game is starting to build a GTA DS base. Considering the games launching into new grounds gamespot feels confident that it's doing well and take 2 seem to be ok with it for now. We will however see in a month or two how it's doing.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

It will probably be more profitable than GTA 4(no idea how take two posted a loss).
