Forums - Sony - PlayStation still exists only because of Final Fantasy VII.

considering sega was direct competition to nintendo....there may have been FF fanboy rages...it was inevitable that it would go to playstation...FFVII indeed helped out playstation....but it wasn't even a consideration for the series go to saturn...because of it's long rivalry...nintendo fanboys would be very enraged....

a good example would be Halo...just forget that it's microsoft ip for a sec(pretend it's a 3rd party) and that the next installment would be so huge they'd have to think about blu-ray...

if xbox720 refused to go blu-ray....and there was a new system that came out next gen with blu-ray....halo would be released on that new system b4 they would even consider releasing it to playstation brand....

so in that sense i dont see why saturn is in this picture at all

So are you saying that if FF VII came to the dreamcast instead of PS that sony would have never made the PS2?

You dont know what you are saying as that statement makes no sense. You need to have hindsight in to the whole situation back in 1996 to understand.

Dreamcast could have had every great game on the system(which it pretty much did) and PS2 would have outsold it pretty fast (which it did). PS2 hype was bigger than games coming out at the time...Not so much with PS1 and Saturn in 1996 though.

Well FF7 is the second best selling game on the PS1.

That was not a statement but a question which stems from me not understanding what exactly is the point my friend Hotmoza is trying to make.

LOL

As long as you feel better now :)

I think it's fair to say that the Saturn would have done much better, would have taken a great deal of sales from the PS1 and Sega could have still been dishing out HW today if that happened... but I don't think they would have won the gen simply because of FFVII, sure they would have gotten more games and boosted more HW because of the marketshare obtained from FFVII but I doubt they would have went higher than 45M.

4 ≈ One

Plenty big games came out before it. With out FF question still would be where Dragon Quest is released.

PS with DC vs Satrun and FF would have been interesting.

 Fixed

Yes, and i and millions of others would have been Sega fanboys today.

Alot of fans knew that PS1 was the way to go for the game Square wanted to build. Square undoubtedly did too. I doubt Sqaure tossed any coins in deciding which console to dev for. Just like the rest of the industry........Anyways, the whole thread seems like raw -and sorry- pointless, cherry picked speculation. I don't agree with your FFVII "what if?" theory either. I once said to a friend, "Can you imagine where MS would be if they hadn't had Halo for the XB? They would have been done." "But they did have Halo" he said. The end.

Thats a theory  for a different thread " how Microsoft thought it could knock Nintendo out of the gaming industry during the GC era"
