Forums - Sony - Sony Refuses To Replace Backwards-Compatible PS3s

leo-j said:

Sony just did what the consumer wanted, a cheaper ps3, and they got it.

(for confusion, none of this hassle would have happened, had people been interested in the 60gb ps3 back in 2007)

This is outrageous!! Sony would never make a defective unit, it must be a Xbox fanboy trying to make Sony look bad but we all know Sony's consoles are the perfect hardware (hi PS2!) and best customer service unlike that X360 and its idiotic 3 year warranty, lolz

What are you looking at, nerd?

About a year ago, backwards-compatible 80GB PS3s were still being sold in stores. I chose to buy a 40GB model because I wasn't sure what would happen if it broke after they stopped manufacturing. Now, I know.

An anonymous TAWKN.com user just called me, distraught. His PS3 has been at Sony's repair center for three weeks now. He bought the 80GB PS3 with backwards-compatibility. Today, he called in to get a status update, and was told that it was beyond repair, and, because Sony doesn't make that model anymore, that they can't replace it, despite the fact that he bought four years' worth of Sony Care extended warranty for it, for a total of five years. They offered to give him a new model 80GB PS3.

He argued with them that he is not just losing a PS3, but PS2 support (that's over 1900 PS2 games that he can no longer play), extra USB ports, plus the built-in card readers. Sony's reply? Too f@#$ing bad.

This guy is very angry at Sony, and rightfully so. They didn't offer him anything but a far inferior model than what he bought about 12 months ago, which he says is unacceptable - and I agree.

At the VERY least, they should be trying to make up for this to him and other users who paid $100 extra for a console that has only one life left to live. If I were in his situation, I'd be demanding either a few oood free games, or a consolation package consisting of: a USB hub, USB memory card readers, PS2 slim, and PS2 component cable.

"If I wanted to go through this much bullshit, I would have bought an Xbox."

Ouch. Understand, I've talked with this guy over the years, and he was instrumental in my own purchase of a PS3. If Sony doesn't remedy this in some manner, I don't think he'll be helping sell their products anymore.

Of course, if they released a firmware tonight with complete software-based PS2 support for all PS3s, then the blow might not be so bad.

If there are any developments, I'll be sure to update.

Has anybody else heard anything like this?

Sigh, another stupid and false post on VGC here, any 80GB PS3 with B/C come with 4 USB ports and built in card readers on market? Please TS,try to make your post more sense.

Hello friend.  Unfortunately your post is confusing the hell out of me.  Please try to make more sense :)

If you are trying to say that because I reported this that I believe it you are wrong.  I posted it so we could have a discussion to bring some perspective to this issue.  I have not personally heard of anyone with the 80gig B/C having a problem with their console until this thread, although I have heard of the ylod on the 60 gig model.

Please clarify your statement...

Dear TS,sorry for being rude, but the problem with your post is,every 80GB PS3(with or without backward compatibility for PS2) were only come with 2USB ports, and no card reader, how come your "friend" can complaint that he lost extra USB ports and integrated card reader, thats what i don't understand.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Sony doesn't do extended warrenty plans? This whole scenario stinks of falsehoods.

OK...  Nice of you to return.  2 things

1)  Please go back to the the first page and read what I edited into the OP.

2)  I have an 80gig PS3 with BC sitting next to me which has 4 (YES FOUR) usb ports and card readers.  This PS3 came with the Motorstorm bundle and in Canada WAS available.  The world is a big place and no all PS3's were not created equally.

Luckily my strange friend BHR-3 has provided us with a thread which hopefully will clarify the details...

Not, true. The 80gb model in North America has 4 usb ports and card readers and PS2 emulation, whereas the ones in Europe has 2 usb ports and no card readers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3 - go to the retail configurations chart.

perhaps the guy is american.
