Forums - Sony - Sony Refuses To Replace Backwards-Compatible PS3s

my brother is going to be sending in his 60GB this or next week.

i'll let you know if he gets shafted.

Best of luck... Reports elsewhere on the net seem to indicate mixed experiences. Some people as recently as this week have gotten replacements, and others have not. This particular instance is dealing with Sony Canada and MTC in Ontario.. So YMMV from city to city, as well. And the only difference between my own warranty experience, and Steve's, is that he got Sony Care through Sony Style retail outlet, and I got mine directly from MTC.

Good luck, though. I wouldn't wish this type of crap on anyone - not even 360 owners. ;)

I can understand them having to make adjustments to a point (although they really messed up not having enough stock to cover the extended warranties).
That said, he should demand a new PS2 in addition to the PS3, or the option they refund the entire price of the PS3 and extended warranty and he can purchase his own.

He did try when they called him back on his cell.. But they said there's nothing they can do, but told him to talk to the store manager at Sony Style when picking up the replacement new-model 80GB tomorrow.

Seems to have been handled pretty well judging from the youtube video. Looks like he will be getting his PS2 backwards compatible 80GB PS3 afterall.

Sounds like the Sony Style shop employees were misinformed or it is standard procedure to first offer a new newer (cheaper) PS3 model first, this then goes forward unless the customer asks for the older model PS3 (more limited supply).

Not suprising (most shops operate like that), but it's nice to hear the repair center has plenty of them in stock for replacement.

Actually, we were both hopeful after that conversation, too. BUT... he got called back shortly after on his cell phone, and the Sony rep told him the same thing they told him yesterday - he's screwed. He's getting a new-model 80GB PS3 tomorrow (that's the scheduled arrival at Sony Style local outlet), and they wouldn't even tell him a reason WHY they can't send a refurb old-model 80GB PS3 from MTC instead - they just refused.

It's even more confusing to me, now... I don't understand. In any case, he's losing out pretty majorly, and he's decided he's just going to "bend over and take it" as he says. I think it's pretty sad, overall, especially that Sony Canada rep who gave us the false hope. But then, that isn't likely his fault - he probably just assumed there's no reason why they couldn't send him one of the refurbs from MTC, since they told me that they have a lot of them.

If true, the normal procedure then is to write a letter to the store detailing all the events and demand a satisfactory solution and written response in a timely fashion.

Considering everything, the store is in a very weak position legally. So, it's most likely they will comply. If not he seems to have a solid legal case.

If there really was is no option for the store to comply (meaning the provided repair center information was wrong), then they still have to provide satisfactory alternatives as stated in my earlier comment.
