Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo Can't Patch Wii Games

This is very interesting, though about 2 months old now, so i apologize if we have already run through this, but i don't seem to remember it coming up around when it came out.

Like i said, a neat little read on the innerworkings of the Wii, on why exactly stuff like Motion Plus/Wii Speak/Keyboard support for old games cannot be patched in, or why accessing the Home menu in an older game looks slightly different. Apparently the Wii lacks a proper OS, so everything relies on an IOS (Input-Output System) to run, which means that everything you see when you're playing a game is coming right off the disc, the games never reference the firmware itself to run anything

I'll warn you, though, it's a bit more negative in tone than many of us will appreciate.

i never knew that, are you sure, what if it's a bug in the game

i think that can patch it

You should be beaten, burned to ashes then someone should throw your ashes from a plane

If i read this right, it would be possible to patch if (and only if), the game itself had built-in code to be able to accept patches. The Wii itself has no capability to run the patch while the game runs, so the game itself would have to call upon the patch and activate it, which is kinda self-defeating (unless the games themselves were developed with the possibility of patches in mind)

Also probably why there can never be DLC with completely new assets (i.e. Brawl DLC, unless they were clones or skin mods or something like it)

Good, the Wii does not yet suffer from a release now patch later mentality that has become so disappointingly prominent with 360/ps3 releases (I blame the devs/pubs not the consoles themselves, don't ban me).
