Metal Gear Solid 5: There's "Pressure", says Hideo Kojima

Series creator and gaming icon Hideo Kojima says there's "definitely pressure" to pursue a fifth instalment.

In a new interview published on Kikizo today, creator of the Metal Gear series Hideo Kojima has boosted speculation about Metal Gear Solid 5, saying there's "definitely pressure" to keep the hugely popular action series going.

Asked whether he feels pressured by the success of the series to make another game, he said: "There is definitely pressure. We don't belong wholly to Konami, so that pressure might be lighter, but since Kojima Productions is a part of Konami and Konami does the business side of things, yeah, I feel pressure there, that there's a need for it to be a successful, ongoing series."

The will-he-won't-he debacle surrounding Kojima's continuing involvement on the series is nothing new. As we put it to him in a previous interview last year, he first told us in 2001 that Metal Gear Solid 2 would be the last MGS title he would work on. He said the same about MGS3, and has once again said it about MGS4.

But even at the time, when pushed last year, he admitted: "...maybe yes, I may well end up spending more time on the Metal Gear series".

Kojima said he has no intentions of focusing on smaller projects, stressing that he wants to work on big stuff, which will also fuel speculation that MGS5 will be a Hideo Kojima game.

"Anything I want to really get involved in will be a bigger project," he explained. "Personally, though, I would like to do smaller projects, but when I think of the time I have left living on this earth, I would rather spend that on bigger things!"

Elsewhere in the three-page interview, Kojima discusses Metal Gear Solid Touch for the iPhone, increasing development costs and a definite interest in working with Western developers - a number of which he has recently visited to see what Kojima Productions can learn from other studios.

"We've always observed other studios within Konami, but I decided that we shouldn't just rely on that; we should take it one step further and look at studios outside of Konami, and perhaps identify areas where Kojima Productions lags behind its competitors."

Personally, I'd like somebody else to take the reins. MGS5 needs an overhaul that I don't think Kojima will be willing to provide. Is it really too much to ask that I be able to actually play more of the game? I mean for fuck's sake, there was at least an hour of cutscenes that could have easily been playable.

Also bring back the CODEC!

nice interview. The only problem with MGS5 is that MGS4 was built to end that storyline.

I've been playing Metal Gear games since the Nes. I love the series, but I think the story has been told. How many times can walking death mobiles threaten the world? Let the series go out like the legend that it is.

With that said, of course Kojima's making another. He always says he's done with the series. Probably been working on the new one for a year, now.

I completely disagree. The series was made to be a movie-like experience, a merging of cinema and gaming. MGS4 was made to complete the storyline. The cutscenes were fantastic and there was still a lot of playable game, especially considering the under-rated MGO.

I believe the series was made to create a stealth-action game, which is another thing I'd like for them to bring back in the fifth one. There was a fantastic lack of stealth in MGS4.

Regarding the cutscenes though, I see no reason why some of them couldn't have been more playable. Why couldn't you take over as Raiden to face Geckos and Vamp in Episode 2 for at least some of the time? How about the first time Snake gets effected by the nanomachines whackadoodles in Episode 1? How about Episode 3? They couldn't rework that entire episode so some of it was playable, like maybe a quick fight with Ocelot towards the end? Frankly it's not even the cutscenes themselves, just the lack of gameplay surrounding them. Any game that needs to bookend a long cutscene with two more long cutscenes with nothing but a save point to seperate them should probably find a way to sneak some game into there.

Yes! Less cutscenes and more code..wait, wtf??? How does codec add more gameplay? I'd rather watch a cinematic then listen to it play out in codec. Seriously, get out of 1998. I think it's less of the game not improving over time and more of you wanting things to stay as they were. What needed to happen was for codec to be cut and instead for the story to be told trhough cutscenes. The only thing I miss from the codec were the awesome easter eggs like snake's box speech, and Signet's dream. Again though, it's not that the game doesn't have easter eggs, it's just that they are more visual now. But it's almost like the television was just invented and your saying, "less t.v. and more books! words are better then pictures!" You sir can take your thirst for knowledge somewhere else! :P
