It became the darling when it began selling like hotcakes (see: from launch).

Nintendo owns the handheld market. There's really no competing with them.

Ya the DS Lite changed things with online sites. Once the DS Lite hit everybody wanted one. I would also say that Mario Kart DS really helped the online sites justify the DS Lite to themselves.
