Whats funny is that the 'main' reason why GT3 sold well, was because of US sales. US accounted for 9 millions sales. For both GT3 and GT4 others and japan were almost exactly the same in sales, but the sales of GT4 were not even 3 million in the US, and this on a console that had/has a user base of 50 million inthe US.

The only real comparison we have is the comparison of GT4 with Halo 3. Both games are currently available, and the sales of Halo 3 are almost the same as GT4 (and without much doubt will pass GT4 before year end). GT4 did outsell Halo2, but barely, with 4 times the userbase. Thus looking at numbers alone, Halo 3 is/will be more popular than GT4. GT5 will NEVER outsell Halo3 and thus NEVER be more popular than Halo3. Forget regional distribution, because total sales = world sales, and that is all that matters (when looking at overall popularity). You would need an attach rate of >50% on the PS3 to outsell Halo3, and that is just not going to happen. Even when a console has a user base of >100 million (PS2), it still is was not able to outsell Halo 3.

This is not a knock on GT5, but the reality is that the US accounts for the most software sold (just look at regional attach rates for every console, and look at the distribution of software sales for the GT5:P), and because the user base in the US is proportianately low for the PS3, it will not sell as well as previous versions.

How do you know that, oh I forgot about time travel, can you lend me your machine? I wanna go see that.

You are absolutely correct, I have no idea about the future, but what do you think the odds makers at Las vegas would say? Would you put your money on Halo 3 or GT5 for selling more? I would say the odds of GT5 selling more than Halo3 are equal to Pittsburg winning the world series. Anything can happen right?

forza selling more than gt? ROFLMAO!!!!!! ok seriously now, Jpn and Others will give GT 7.5 million alone

this is a tough one, I;m going to go with GT going by this generation of gamer's massive acceptance of GT5P. If you take GT5P's sales and estimate growth of PS3 userbase with GT's fanbase I believe GT5 can surpass GT4's sales. It might even be able to match the original GT's sales.

Halo 3 is massive seller. It is just that as of now its an "old" game. It is a massive seller though and Halo 3: ODST will probably sell about 8 million. It is just that it doesnt have John in it.

GT4 sold over 5 million in europe ALONE hello.
its europe game and it's very popular in every region.

even with the rampant piracy of the ps2 it sold over 9.6 million copies.

How many has each franchise sold. Minus the ps1 versions if you want. Its simple.

Ynwa.

PS2 userbase / GT3 sales= % ; PS3 userbase X (times) % = GT5 sales :)

Simple enough.

It's the other way around...GT3 sales/PS2 userbase = % attach rate.

In any case, I don't get this userbase argument. Has it ever proven correct for anything? It sounds good in theory, but according to that logic, MGS4 shouldn't have even cracked 1 million, as the highest-selling MGS on PS2 was bought by only 4% of the userbase. And look at SSBM...that only sold 1.5 million less than Brawl (so far), despite having half the userbase.

That is a very good point, but i imagine that it really varies, but what that proves is that the amount a game sells in any given time period on any given system, would greatly show how popular a game is, but then you also have to consider how heavily bundled that said game is/was.

For the most part everybody here has offered very good arguements as to whether halo 3 is more popular than GT or not.  But of course this arguement cannot be fully resolved until GT5 comes out.  Although i would have to say the odds are kind of stacked against GT5 but we shall see.
