Halo is more popular for the simple fact that its a big franchise with an actual character.

A person that knows bare minimum in gaming would probably have a higher chance of knowing the halo series compared to the GT series because of MC.

MC is more popular than a Mustang :p ??

I just asked my sister, who is a casual gamer (...barely, but I'd put her in the category of someone who knows a "bare minimum" about video games) about Master Chief, and her response was "who the hell is that?"

Halo is obviously very popular, but I don't think MC has been around long enough to be an iconic character compared to the likes of, say, Solid Snake or Lara Croft. Maybe in five years.

That said, I'm not sure the average [American] person would be aware of GT, either (though if you asked them to name one racing game, GT would probably be the franchise mentioned).

Hey the J man said probably....and with respect to the racing franchise it would probably be need for speed or mario kart.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

I believe GT is more popular just by looking at the sales :)

2nd best sold race game ever says a lot.

lol I'm not coming down on you or anything, just stating my thoughts.

Times have changed, why can't some people grasp that?? (instead of telling me to grasp how past sales make gt bigger then halo in the present). I mean the Ps2 sold 140 million look what's happening to the Ps3 now. I know it isn't quite the same it's just an example.

I think Halo will be the winner in the end, it seems the racing genre (simulation racing) isn't as popular as it once was plus there are many other good racing games, also I think it's releasing too late. GT5 will still see some very big numbers although I think it won't go past 10 million, but we will see.

I agree with that. GT5 won't big as big on PS3 because of userbase. Shooter is this generation genre not some racing genre.

Also I think the Simulation racing fans are now somewhat split up between the HD consoles.

A few of my, well I won't call them my friends just some guys I sometimes hang out with were all the typical ps2 owners playing GT and Fifa last generation, now they have a 360 and play Forza and Fifa.

Of course I also now some guys swearing only on GT, but that's what I mean by split up. They haven't all moved to the 360 but I think it's still a significant number of gamers who have, at least enough for Halo to outsell GT5 this generation.

This isn't even a question. People mentioning user bases? You're off base. If we're talking popularity? The Gran Turismo franchise is clearly more popular. The best selling Gran Turismo game has sold easily more than the best selling Halo game.

As a matter of fact, all Gran Turismo's have sold well. Why? It's MORE popular than Halo. It's just that simple. Halo is not the end all be all. Especially on a world wide scale. Japanese could careless about Halo. Europe as whole doesn't care that much either. Gran Turismo is Halo (In America) huge in Europe and Japan.

Yeah but the best selling GT game was released 8 years ago. Do you really think looking at it that black and white gives an accurate picture of how well GT5 will perform in today's environment?

You talk about GT being popular on a worldwide scale as opposed to Halo's American dominance like it means something. Just pitting two regions against one does not make the two more powerful.

America for the 360 accounts for 166,157,971 in software sales. Others and Japan combined for 360 account for 57,467,437 in software sales. So Halo's strongest region, America accounts for 74% of the buying audience.

Japan and Others for the PS3 account for 63,414,326 in software sales. America accounts for 64,199,452 in software sales. So Gran Turismo's strongest regions account for almost 50% of the buying audience.

So it's better for Halo to be strongest in America than it is for Gran Turismo to be strongest in Others/Japan because America is a bigger region than both of them combined, especially in the case of the 360.

for GT5 to stand a chance of outselling Halo 3 it needs to get close to the best selling GT of all time.

Do people really believe it can do that when the console userbase is so much smaller and there is much more fierce competition out there?
