i love how people get angered over having to help others :o I especially like it when people object to community service but preach the bible

>_< Help thy fellow man seems to be a quote easily forgotten in such a situation

i think you missed the point somewhat, it isnt volunteering to help people, its being FORCED to help people by your school, which is very different, i do voulantry work, but i choose to do so, i wasnt forced to do it, nor should i be, its voulantry work, people arent angered by helping others, theyre angered at not being allowed to choose wether or not to do so.

im an atheist, so all that bible stuff means jack shit to me.

SiFiBoy, this is my exact argument with respect to progressive taxation. You are forcing me to work to help people, and not allowing me to choose.

youre comparing forced voulantry work to taxes now?

youre not being forced to do extra work for thoose taxes either?

taxes are essential to the economy, forcing children to do work is not, there are many reasons the two are unrelated.

There are two kinds of taxes. Those needed to run the country, and those taken to help out people who have less.

I am not talking about the first category. I am happy to pay those taxes. Not sure why making me work to help others, is any different then making me work doing community service to help others.

Gotta love western countries these days. The race towards tyranny continues.

i dont see it that way at all, i define all taxes in the first category, as helping people is the governments job, its not the job of 15 year olds.

Sounds like a government trying to change a society...which doesn't really work.

I guess you can make the argument that it has worked to some extent (civil rights, ending segregation in the U.S.) but a change like this can't be done by the government.  It's volunteer work, after all.  You can't be forced to do volunteer work.  If you want people to do more volunteer work, that's a change that must come from the people, not the government.

This is where you and I fundamentally disagree. I don't think it's the governments job to help people, I think it's the governments job to protect people.

The government has no way to help people. Before it can give, it must take. With entitlement programs (what I meant to say, not progressive taxation), you are helping one group by sacrificing another.

It's the exact same thing as what this thread is about. The only difference here is you now don't like the group being sacrificed.

Protection however, is something the government can give all people, all the time.

It's late. Off to bed :)

+1

Income tax, too, I think it's preying on the lower class. They don't have their own accountant(s) to maximize the tax return and lack the knowledge to exploit loopholes.
