Metal Gear was released in 1987, Thief was released in 1998.

Anyway, I've only played the demo of the first Splinter Cell and while I did like it quite a lot, I still prefer MGS. I'd say it's mainly due to the series's story but I suppose it's also better in the sense that it's not taking itself so seriously. Of course serious games are often fun but I find MGS better as a whole.

And Castle Wolfenstein - the true pioneer of the 2D stealth genre - was released in 1981. However, Metal Gear Solid was one of three games responsible for reinventing the stealth genre in 1998. (The other two were Tenchu: Stealth Assassins and Thief: The Dark Project.)

As for the people who keep bringing up reviews, what reviews are you looking at? From Metacritic:

93 Splinter Cell
93 Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
94 Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
(Double Agent sucked, but it was from a different developer.)

Sometimes I wonder if the Splinter Cell haters played the horrible PS2 version. Personally I'm not a fan of either series; I've only played the original Splinter Cell (Xbox version) and MGS2 (PS2 version). Neither one held my interest long enough for me to finish them, and I finish almost every game I play. The stealth genre just isn't for me.

I played the crappy PS2 versions, and I still loved the games! Double Agent was made by Shanghai, the same people who made Pandora Tomorrow. Montreal is the one who made 1 and 3, both great games. I hate Montreal for what they did to Convictions though =(

I now have absolutely no regrets or incentives to buy a 360. I hated Assassin's Creed and Ubisoft wants to promote their crowd mechanics thing =/

I lose respect for anyone opting for Splinter Cell.

It shouldn't even be up for discussion; reviews, sales and impact on gaming have spoken.

Splinter Cell ...

MGS kept bringing me back for more. Splinter Cell had more "try try again" style of gameplay. I found myself getting into, and out of, exciting situations in MGS far more than any of the Splinter Cell titles -- in SC, I just was really steathy (which was the fun part of SC), or I was dead and had to try again. No escaping if you screwed up, for the most part. MGS had both the stealth and the thrill of "oops" without having to constantly reload from the last checkpoint.

MGS was more fun. ...and the story was less generic, and thus, better.

Splinter Cell is still one of my favorite game series, though.

which series was better

which one was the better stealth action game

Both are great.

The Solid series has not had a bad game unlike the splinter cell series (Double Agent).

Splinter Cell

Boys play MGS because they want to be men.

Men play Splinter Cell because they want to be gods.

just the words of a 360 fanboy, MGS schools Splinter Cell.

btw, for those to whom it isnt obvious, MGS started the stealth action genre splinter cell just hopped on board

Eh, I'd say that Thief was on that first - I don't know if the series predates Metal Gear, but it damn sure predates Metal Gear Solid.

Why was I replied to? My obvious sillyness wasn't apparant to all?

But yeah, Thief is the one!

Tease.

I find it funny comparing the two.
MGS obviously.

Overall it would be the MGS series, but Splinter Cell is still an epic series

MGS for its immersive story and jokes

Splinter Cell for pure stealth gameplay

you can't even compare mgs with splinter cell

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

In my own opinion both games are extremely boring.

I'm just hoping Splinter Cell Convition changes the genre to something interesting.
