Forums - Microsoft - The next gen games are afoot: Microsoft snags top Sun engineer.

Sun makes many things, but if Microsoft is hiring people away from them then it's probably to work on either the operating system or the .NET platform, not games. If they want to get game programmers, they'll hire them away from game developers, and Sun isn't one of those.

No one said he was going to be a games programmer.

The title of this thread does.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

No it doesn't.  Games is referring to the competition between whomever is involved in the next generation of video games.  At least that is my interpretation.

Wow a CTO! This is big news because we all know CTO's, CFO's, and CEO's are responsible for all technological progress. That is when Super Scientist/Super Soldier Will Smith isn't responsible.

This is actually important, but the story is that company execs are bailing from a sinking SUN.

holy awesome!

this is why I love MS forever.

That's my interpretation too. But games have been afoot for a while now. For example, Intel and Sony evaluating the possibility of a Larrabbee-based GPU for the next Playstation is at least 4 months old.

My take is that this guy will work on the toolchain: devkits, compiler optimization for multicore architecture etc.

At Sun they probably have worked quite a lot on those for their Niagara-based machines. If IBM's aquisition really happens, once again MS and Sony will work with not-so-different ingredients, because I suppose that some of the same technology will trickle down the Cell line.

This is the guy who will manage those guys.

Of course. I don't kow the internal terminology at MS, but I suppose that title is either for a software architect or a project manager.

I thought we had all agreed that there wouldn't be a new xbox until 2014. What's up with this and the Blizzard announcement from last month?

Heavens to Murgatoids.

Interesting news,......thank you for the info Squilliam....:)

When a console comes out is not the same thing when planning starts. All companies after release start the next project. Considering the 360 has been out for 3 years now they probably already have the architecturedesign  in place. Though we won't see screen shots of what the new machine for another year or 2. Maybe more.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
