Final Fantasy IV by a long shot, to me
For the most recent editions, I feel like the best one is XII

FFI.
Nah, j/k of course. Haven't played 'em all, but out of the ones I have, probably FFVI.

I have similar view. FFIV and FFVI have my favorite stories. There is one thing that gives IV the edge over VI for me. A few of the characters in VI weren't well fleshed out. FFX has my favorite story since FFVI, but I'd still rank FFIV and FFVI above it.

final fantasy 9 was the best but 7 was a very close 2nd and final fantasy 8 was right behind that.
Wow this thread is old. But anyway imo the best story is FF VI.
Nintendo and PC gamer

Two in particular for me.
IX. This was my first FF game, so, I'm biased and there is emotional sentiment attached to it. However, overall, the game was just really fun and the characters were extremely varied, from Zidane, to Vivi, to Amarant and Freya. The world of IX was also very wholesome. I loved Treno and Lindblum, very fun cities to navigate.
X. This is my favorite FF game, period. Awesome characters being Kimahri, Auron, and Wakka. The characters again, were varied (I mention this because it seems the latest FF games have dry and emotionless characters who do not vary as much as the old characters did) and driven by their own personal feelings. The atmosphere and landscape of FF X (Spira) was also varied and unforgiving in many places.
