Forums - Sony - Sony: Our first-party dev is as big as Microsoft and Nintendo's combined

Since this is coming from the horses mouth I'll assume it is true.

1. Are these studios a drain or are they profiting. I'll assume the former unless corrected with strong evidence because if they have that many employees its got to be a massive drain on their resources if every single HD publisher is losing money pretty much even with some impressive blockbuster releases I have to assume that Sony is as well at this point.

2. Is their pursuit of development excellence causing them to hire huge quantities of staff at the expense of profits. Guerilla games had in excess of 200 staff at points in Killzone 2 development and I heard that Santa Monica had two animators for every programmer and thats a lot of staff and expensive MOCAP.

1. As I recall MakingMusic setting out a while ago, SCEWWS is the most profitable part of Sony's gaming division. Think it's only San Diego that historically hasn't set the charts alight (that said, MLB 09 The Show is sitting pretty at 90 on Metacritic).

2. Please don't do a starcraft. You're coming ambiguously close to suggesting that GG was super-staffed during KZ2 development. As MakingMusic (wow, he's been useful!) has explained countless times, the vast majority of development was done by the original, moderately-staffed group before rising for the last stretch.

Edit: MakingMusic, get yo' ass in here and explain this better.

1. I said it's probably one of the more profitable parts of SCE.  Not the most.  And it's pure speculation on my part, based on the probability that every game they publish outside of Lair, the NBA series, and maybe Folklore has made a profit, some a rather hefty profit (look at LBP's sales, then consider that the team was never larger than 37 people 0_o).  It's quite possible that revenue generated from PSP hardware sales could exceed the profit made by SCEWWS.

2. Guerrilla slowly grew to their rather large numbers over parts of late 2006 (when they were acquired by Sony), the entirety of 2007, and early 2008, when they reached their peak.  They were quite heavily staffed for at least the latter half of Killzone 2's development.  However, they never neared, let alone exceeded 200 employees.  They were around 160 throughout most of 2008.

As for Sony Santa Monica, it was said that they have two animators working on each of Kratos' attacks/moves for God of War III.  What exactly that means I couldn't say.  I'd assume two animators work on one move, flesh it out, then start working on another move.

I honestly can't believe people got so worked up over this as if it was news. Sony has been beating this fact into gamers head for at least two years.

Exactly and yet, they don't have many games of the quality of Nintendo's 1st party lineup to show for it. Which is pretty sad.

I agree with you though, who cares how big a dev is? If they produce crap, they could have 100,000 workers and it would mean nothing to me.

Hopefully Sony's got stuff some good coming out that's not from Naughty Dog or Insomniac

EA is the largest development house in the industry, followed by Ubisoft, then Sony.  Comparatively, I'd say Sony does rather well.

I don't want to read 4 pages of stuff, so my comment is this.

If Sony's 1st and 2nd party base is so much bigger, by be extension better, than MS and Nintendo combined, then why is it Nintendo is the only company that can carry their entire company solely of their software?

LMAO that why N64 got its ass kicked and GC was a utter joke right, they franchises sure failed big time there.

A new kid on th eblock wasted NIN and trashed them for over a decade.

vg is always great for a good laugh.

After one hour of reading this thread I can say Sony has more devs than Nintendo but their games doesn't sell that good, except for GT, that's good for gamers but bad for the company.

and THAT my friend is why I feel Sony is the Best Gaming company ever!!!! They are willing to bite the bullet just to get gamers quality games.

I once read an article about how Sony might be too "Creative" for their own good. They are known to developers for never saying "NO" to unique ideas for a game. Shoot, had team ICO been working for anyone else, they would have been shut down immediately. Or Killzone, Killzone series would have been canned after the first game, never having the chance of the awesomeness that is KZ2.

I think a "tear" just came to my eye when I read this post....it is so true and we know that we would miss out on some of the greatest games this generation would have seen. (killzone 2 and anything team ICO can make)

i am right there with u

well that nice to hear for us gamers. more developers means most likely more games at a quicker pace.

but for shareholders i would be thinking the opposite. i would be thinking how come nintendo is selling insanely more software than you guys when you have so many developers.

As gamers, we can't do anything about the shareholders. All we can do is hope for more games, which they seem to be producing, lots of, for us. That's really all that matters.

Wait lots? Why do people say SONY has produced lots of games. Many are in production but not many have been released.

Nintendo has released more firsty party games. Last time I checked Naughty Dog and Insomnia are second party.

@ Dark Chaos
Actually Sony has produced more over the years then any other company, Wiki it.

1st Party:Sony owned(Uncharted)
2nd Party: Sony owned IP by a 3rd party publisher (Heavy Rain, Heavenly Sword.not real term)
3rd Party: Stand alone Producer making a game exclusive while still owning the IP(ala MGS4)

Insomniac is 2nd party. They are not owned by Sony but only produce Sony owned IPs
Naughty Dog is 1st Party. Sony owns them.

No, I won't. Guerrilla is a good company and just because YOU may not have prefered their offerings, including the recent Killzone 2, doesn't mean they're a bad dev.

Hmm, ok, you guys like opinions based on Metacritic scores, all their games at ~70 at best. That's mediocre. Don't know how KZ2 was rated >90. Must be a miracle, they finally make a good game? Personally, I disagree, but whatever...

@axumblade ...or maybe I just have my OWN opinion on games.

70, 77 and 92 to be exact so your post is essentially "all their games are 70 at best on metacritic (i dont know what im saying and havent looked at the actually numbers but 70 sounds good) i dont know about killzone probably over 90 (dang over 90 across the board sounds pretty good my arguments maybe falling apart) Id bette rinsert some jab with it being a miracle (dang my point holds no water i better just say i disagree and throw in a whatever to show im just too cool to care)

And then throw in a ridiculous comment about you being allowed to criticize people defending their tastes but people better lay off on you because their your "OWN" opinions when youre argueing on a subjective issue with others with a "matter of fact" attitude saying they should exclude guerrila games from quality devs.

Nice.

Its actually 50, 70, 77 and then 92. But if you count their games before the studio changed its name to Guerilla, then things are even worse.

GM has the most car development teams and car models in the auto industry and they are a smashing success.

GM cars unlike Sony games aren't rated/reviewed/regarded particularly highly.

Plus, the analogy would only be appropriate if the car manufacturers were marketing competing programs allowing buyers to drive any car they've produced, as with a console.  If that were true, and GM had 1) a large number of 2) quality models (akin to Sony here with games), other manufacturers might have reason to be concerned.

I don't know which of these post is funnier. Needless to say this thread delivers.
