Forums - Sony - PSU: "CryEngine 3 vs. Unreal Engine 3 Comparison."

PSUNews: "Chances are that over the last few years you've played a game built using the Unreal Engine 3. Whether on BioShock, Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War or another game, you've seen the engine in action. Some think it's the best game engine built to date, while others think it's old and overused. Well, with the recent announcement of Crytek's new CryEngine 3, Epic may need to watch its back, as there's a new game engine in town and it's sporting technology surpassing anything seen on the consoles yet. Both game engines support features such as realistic lighting (global illumination), depth of field/motion blur, advanced physics, developer support and rendering tools, so what sets them apart?

With the Unreal Engine 3, developers have access to a wide collection of 3D party plug-ins including FaceFX, SpeedTree, and Morpheme. These partnerships with 3rd party software developers allows Epic's engine to support many world class simulators and sandbox creation and editor tools. For example, studios using Unreal Engine 3 have access NVIDIA PhysX, which offers cloth and destructibility physics, as well as Autodesk Kynapse, which handles complex AI.

On the flip side, Crytek built nearly all CryEngine 3 tools and editors in-house. Boasting everything from Ocean Wave Technology to CryPhyics, Crytek has created an engine built for complex simulations and visual prowess. What was once king of high-end PC gaming, will now be enjoyed on your PS3. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stated that CryEngine 3 is "not just a little improvement upon CryEngine 2, it's actually a significant rewrite towards a console engine."

"To refresh your memory, a few Unreal Engine 3 titles that have come out in the last few years include Army of Two, BioShock, Mirror's Edge, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. So far, Crytek has yet to announce any titles using CryEngine 3, though rumor has it that not only is a PS3 version of Crysis on the way, but even Hollywood is looking at using the CryEngine 3 for creating CGI sequences on silver screen.

Below, we've posted a screenshot comparison of the two engines. For a more detailed look at each engine, you can read more about the Unreal Engine 3 here, and Crytek's CryEngine 3 here.

crytek3 looks nice... but those screenshot can't really be comparible... comparing engine is diffcult since it's very unlikely a game will be built on two engine and then to be compared sidebyside...

U3 engine has the BIGGEST problem with texture pop-in because of the limited ram for texture cache on console... I hope cryengine 3 will be better... I am also pretty certain U3 in the recent GDC just announced an enhance U3 engine to deal specifically with texture pop-in...

This will be an interesting battle to see. But I am leaning toward U3 because of Nvidia PhysX since it IS VERY efficient at what it does.

This has been posted before, Sony discussion??? And you're comparing an ENGINE to a GAME. By the time you make a game out of the engine it won't look as nice and Unreal Engine 3 would have had time to implement their own improvements also.

Tease.

the CryEngine 3 "rapes" the Unreal Engine 3;  it looks waaaaaaaaaaay more real

are you basing this from fact? or you are basing this from those screenshots... they aren't even rendering the exact same thing :/

I checked, and NO this hasn't been posted before... and its "Sony Discussion" because its from a PS site using PS3 images therefore this interview is related directly to the PS3 versions.

And no, CryEngine has a good chance at being better then Unreal 3.

anyone who has a decent computer knows the cryengine is leaps and bounds better than the Unreal3 engine. Crytek will be the new engine to use IMO.

The Halo francise is the most overrated bland game to ever hit the console market. It provides a bad name to all FPS that even showed effort at creating an original entertaining plot.

I probably have more ps3 games than you :/

It has been posted before... I posted in the last thread about this same article.

There won't be a game released based on this engine until 2010 at the earliest, a lot can happen in that time. Unreal Engine 3 is continuing to be developed as well, Epic are also excellent engine developers so you shouldn't speculate that they will be unable to improve their engine in the mean time. They already announced the "Lightmass" lighting upgrade for their engine along with many other tweaks.

Tease.

You act like the CryEngine won't be developed better over time either  Unreal3 engine can't compete, and will need to be something completely new to stand up to Crytek's stuff.
