Forums - Gaming - Has a console ever started out slow and ended up winning the generation?

Depends on the point of view.

By the sales means, all consoles who previously won started out slow and then grow faster. But if a console who was loosing at the beggining and turned the table, were two: SNES and PS1. SNES because was released after the Genesis and took some time to overthrow it's leadership and PS1 because in the beggining (in Japan) was selling less than Sega Saturn.

PS1 started off slower than the PS3

Although unlikely both PS3 and 360 could overtake the Wii. It is all about who has the game changing software and how well its countered. For example say MS or Sony find that system selling exclusive that appeals to the masses. I don't think either of them have had that yet. Halo 3 is probably the closest thing the Xbox has had as far as system sellers this generation and it already appealed to the 360 fans anyway. Wii has Wii Sports which has everyone over the age of 40 addicted to it like crack and also Wii Fit. Wii console sales would be dead in the water right now without Wii Fit as I do not know one single person who is currently buying a Wii without the intentions of picking up Fit in say the last say 6 months or so. And MS and Sony both have not had anything to counter that game in any way.

Yes PS3 is off to a much slower start then almost anyone anticipated, but to be fair its still selling well if you compare it to almost any other console. The 360 is also selling well and seems like it is really starting to gain some momentum, but it hasn't significantly widened the gap from the 1 year head start either.

There are really only three groups of people that own the Wii.
The hardcore Nintendo fans, who do buy alot of games, but mostly prefer Nintendo published software as they have arguably some of the best franchises of any console.

The hardcore gamers, people in this group own at least 1 other current gen system (360/PS3) they like primarily Nintendo titles and other exclusives for the Wii, but will buy all multiplatform titles (Madden) on their other system. Every 6 months or so we will dust it off and buy a new exclusive.

The Family people, these are people who have bought the Wii because of its family oriented and healthy image. After the initial purchase it is fun for a week, so they go to the store and buy some more games then after a month or two it gets old and it just sits there unless there is company over visiting. These people don't buy many games to begin with.

A good example of how PS3 wins this generation is if Blu-Ray somehow does what DVD did, DVD was out for several years like 4 years before it started getting adopted by the masses. If the masses started clamoring for Blu-Ray PS3 quickly becomes the fastest selling console.

The SNES started out relatively slowly. I'm not sure is it was ever behind though.

Well the Gensis was launched waaay before it.  So... kinda.

Of course the Gensis was also getting it's ass handed to it by the NES for a while hence the SNES didn't need to come out.

Actually, it was the other way around.

The NES had nearly maximum market share and Nintendo was easily in home/console monopoly status when Sega launched the Genesis.  The Genesis vs NES battle was David vs Goliath... and the Genesis started winning.  Nintendo started losing market share and Sega's popularity rose.  Sega attacked the NES' technical specs, Nintendo's games, and Nintendo's image and begin carving out a market for itself.  I think many retailers welcomed Sega's presence in the market place as a refreshing change from the oppressive Nintendo.  I also think the creation of the SNES was in direct response to the Genesis though I have no proof of that.

When viewed in this way, the Genesis was no more losing to the NES than the Wii is losing to the PS2 today.

it's called wishfull thinking....

especially since the console has been outsold by the 360 almost every week since last fall...
and catching up on the Wii... no comment.

The PS3 is in a much better place than most think. Price cut and a tone of killer apps this year and next will shake things right up. Cannot wait to see the haters squirm then.

I heard the exact same thing last year.  So tell me, if it doesn't really "shake things right up"... will you squirm?   I do agree the PS3 is not in that bad of a place, I just don't expect it to change much.

If I remember right, it wasn't until the end of the generation that the SNES blew past the Genesis. It took a long time for the SNES to take off, as Sega's ad campaign was able to effectively convince gamers that the Genesis was where you wanted to be.

I agree with that... except for one thing.

Genesis launched in Japan way before it did in the US.

In Japan the NES crushed the Genesis.  The Genisis never took off.

Hence the "NES handed it's ass to it for a while."

There was no need for the SNES until the "exterme" marketing campaign came out and the system was released in the US.

Aw, you're usually more thorough than this.

Notice how my post only says "Genesis" and not "Megadrive."  ^_~
