Forums - Gaming - Where will the remaining big JRPGs go? An overview.

JRPGs are hot topics, mainly because they have many hardcore fans.

As can be seen in the scheme below the spread of JRPGs across the three consoles of released+announced JRPGs is fairly even (but please don't discuss that here), but there are a few major ones that are yet to be announced that could tip the balance in either direction.

These three are Kingdom Hearts 3, Suikoden 6 and Shin Megami Tensei (which could have the main series, Persona and Devil's Summoner). I've added some pro's (and one con) for the release of these games on each platform.

  Wii PS3 360
The big ones Dragon Quest X Final Fantasy XIII Final Fantasy XIII
Tales of Graces Final Fantasy Versus XIII Star Ocean 4
The Crystal Bearers Tales of Vesperia Tales of Vesperia

Secondary Arc Rise Fantasia White Knight Chronicles Lost Odyssey
Tales of Symphonia: DotNW Eternal Sonata The Last Remnant
Kizuna Demon's Souls Infinite Undiscovery
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Valkyria Chronicles Blue Dragon
Mursamas: Demon Blade Disgaea 3 Eternal Sonata

Kingdom Hearts 3 + Userbase + Final Fantasy main series + Major SE investments
+ Disney and Wii audience match + Nomura (?) + HD dual development
+ HD dual development + Final Fantasy main in the West

Suikoden VI + Tierkreis on DS + Suikoden on PSN + HD dual development
+ Dragon Quest + Strong PS affinity
+ Japanese userbase + HD dual development
+ Cheaper to develop for

Shin Megami + Japanese userbase + Strong PS affinity + High attach rate of JRPGs
Tensei + Dragon Quest + PSP Persona - Atlus not known for multiplats
+ Cheaper to develop for

Please discuss!

I think Lost Odyssey is more of a big JRPG than ToV and SO4 are

Well, I based it on the series and history. Tales and Star Ocean are respected series with an existing fanbase.

When you say '+ High attach rate of JRPGs' for Shin Megami Tensei on 360, you are talking in Japan only right?

That's neither a plus or a negative as the console hasn't sold as many as the other consoles in Japan, so you'd be limiting your sales before you even released it. 200,000 on a 1million console is a bettern attach rate then 400,000 on a 3 million console but which is better?

Hmm, pie.

Yes, Japan only. But that's the main market voor SMT anyways.

The positive about the attach rate is that the 360 has a very reliable JRPG-buying userbase. However the downside is that the userbase is rather small.

Nice Thread Benga!

But what about the Valkryie and Phantasy Series!?!?!?

I think KH3 will be on all consoles. Doesn't make sense to seperate it from the FF fanbase as there's a big overlap between the two, and it doesn't make sense to ignore the Wii either.

Then again, it doesn't make sense for Star Ocean to be 360 exclusive either, so who knows...

Agreed, but i'd bet a PS3 version with more content is on the way.

Are they really that relevant? I think the three I mentioned are the biggest still left. Kingdom Hearts is obviously the biggest by far, but Suikoden is imo bigger than Valkyrie Profile and Phantasy Star. Megaten is on the list because its insane quality and even insaner hardcore fanbase.

Obviously a release of a new Chrono/Mana/Xenogears etc would be bigger than these, but those are not so likely to be released.

Well maybe not to everyone... but for what its worth, i'd be pissed if say... the next Valkryie profile game went to the Wii or PSP or DS...

If it came to the 360, PS3 or PS360 im good... again for what its worth. as for Phantasy Star Dual HD.
