I'm pretty sure it wasn't a PS3 related announcement hence the PS2 price cut.

I think Sony is going to continue concentrating on making profit. They are a business after all.

Regardless,I think the PS3 is selling well enough to last until christmas without a price drop.

I agree with you there.  I mean, it may not be selling 360 numbers or Wii numbers, but it is only about 30-50k off each week at $100-200 higher price so it really is doing fine.

^thats my thoughts exactly, they should keep the same price, they wont sell as many units as 360 in current pricing but they are selling very well for price.

they will have lost more marketshare by end of 2009 but thats the way it goes sometimes there beaten on price

Does anyone actually know whether or not Sony can afford to cut the price of PS3 this year?

Is there anyone on here who works for Sony and has inside information on whether or not we will see a PS3 price cut this year?

I don't have any insider information, but I did read their latest financial reports. They "can afford" a price cut in the sense that they wouldn't go quickly go bankrupt because of that action alone, but there are other important issues:

- They have been promising profitability in the game division to shareholders for a while (and they haven't achieved that yet in a significant way). Surely PS3 production costs are always decreasing, but so are PS2 software sales which were a big cash cow for them.

- The recession is now making Sony as a whole lose money (i.e. they have problems bigger than a few points of market share in the console market).

- It looks like the recession will last quite a while, which creates a lot of uncertainty about spending money in wrong ways.

- No matter what the fanboys tell you, Sony is not a very resilient company right now. They have less than $10 billion in cash, which doesn't last for that long under the massive losses they're incurring (check out the articles from January with Sony's predictions for their losses in this quarter... it was a few billion dollars).

I have been saying since last Thanksgiving there would be no PS3 price cut until this Holiday season (around Thanksgiving) and it will be around $50. After seeing what kind of damage Sony has been taking with the Yen/Dollar conversion, I am starting to think it may not even happen then.

If the PS3 doesn't have a price drop this Christmas and the re-session keeps on going, look for M$ to really pound them into the ground. Quite possibly outselling them by 2x what they did last Christmas. (If M$ bundles heavily and drops price again)

Yes, I found those iSuppli estimates too, but they are based on October 2008 costs.
