Is there anyone on here who works for Sony and has inside information on whether or not we will see a PS3 price cut this year? |
I don't have any insider information, but I did read their latest financial reports. They "can afford" a price cut in the sense that they wouldn't go quickly go bankrupt because of that action alone, but there are other important issues:
- They have been promising profitability in the game division to shareholders for a while (and they haven't achieved that yet in a significant way). Surely PS3 production costs are always decreasing, but so are PS2 software sales which were a big cash cow for them.
- The recession is now making Sony as a whole lose money (i.e. they have problems bigger than a few points of market share in the console market).
- It looks like the recession will last quite a while, which creates a lot of uncertainty about spending money in wrong ways.
- No matter what the fanboys tell you, Sony is not a very resilient company right now. They have less than $10 billion in cash, which doesn't last for that long under the massive losses they're incurring (check out the articles from January with Sony's predictions for their losses in this quarter... it was a few billion dollars).
