XP > Vista
MAC > Microsoft

All my Bro did was dual booted his MAC with XP, and now I want one for myself! :O

Windows 7 = XP > Vista

And

Linux distros > Mac > Windows

For the general audience, hell no.  Linux will never work for the general public until they figure out a new method instead of requiring most software to be installed by command line.  That and networking them are just not very easy to do if you have no linux knowledge (ie. the general public).

I'm surprised it got this far without anyone saying anything....  Command line software installs aren't mandatory anymore.  AFAIK most distros use a GUI interface, Ubuntu uses Synaptic Package Manager which lets you browse through your repos and get some information on a package before you install it, also installing all the required packages to make whatever you're installing work.  Granted there may be some tweaking you may have to do with the command line, but the method you speak of exists.

Networking is easy too....  Wireless is the only bitch, LAN is as easy as being setup automagically when you install. :P

Wireless is what I meant by networking.  And as far as software installs, Using ubuntu as my example here, you have to use the terminal/command line unless the software is included with the search feature thing you are describing.  Thre are tons of software that I wanted and wasn't available in the preset list of stuff, which I had to install manually and was a huge pain.

This was as of 2 years ago as I have gotten rid of Ubuntu ever since those instances.  Perhaps some of the newer versions released changed this?

This is nothing in comparison to the billion ads Mac did attacking PC. Fuck I hate Mac ads.

Oh dear god, another one of these flaming threads.... I'll stay out of this. :p

A lot of the time adding more repositories solves the lack of software issue, but I think every release of Ubuntu has slowly improved on many of the main issues with Linux.  For the everyday, email, browsing internet, porn, IM, youtube computer users, Ubuntu is perfect.  There just isn't enough word of mouth or advertising to get people interested in giving it a try.

come on guys.. didnt the mac platform shift to the PC platform when mac jumped into bed with intel with core duo and then again with wintel with bootcamp.

Overall M$ is still smarter here.. PC's can do more stuff than mac. Its nice that macs have a more stable/virus free OS, but compared to windows they have horridly expensive hardware(why the hell use proprietary RAM), limited 3rd party support. In fact I choose ubuntu over OSX anyday..

why dont mac ads show macs running web servers, or playing cool 1080p higher games? well coz very very few macs do that..

Im not a huge vista supporter either, even though it runs on my rig fine, but paying 2-3 even 4x for the same shit is ridiculous.

You are living in the past my friend.  Macs use all industry standards parts- hard drives, memory, graphics cards, processors.   They do use custom designed mother boards and fan systems (which is why they are so quiet),  which supports Apple's corporate interest in unique design and creating attractive form factors.

And THAT is the point. Macs don't exist. They are PCs just like windows. The only difference is I can't just buy the OS and install it on my machine, apple expects me to buy a whole new computer!

=

They do indeed exist as unique and innovative platforms unto themselves......they aren't merely PC's,  they are PC's evolved.  They embrace the latest hardware standards and technology,  open standards, virtualization, etc.

And as others have said,  you actually can install the Mac OS on your own PC hardware without too much hassle.  Though the experience will be less then optimal since the OS is designed to work with the hardware as an integrated package.

The way I view things is that computers are basically tools.......you get what meets your needs and fits your budget.  I sure a simple pocket knife is less expensive than a Swiss army knife,  but if I I planned on going camping, hiking,  or just like to be prepared and have lots of options.....I know which one I'd want to be using.

All creative people love Macs.
Advertising companies are creative
Therefore, the people that MS hired to do their commercials are trying to sabotage MS by producing subpar adverts.

It wasn't witty, and it was completely obvious when they cherry pick and draw incorrect conclusions.

All creative people love Macs?

How about I make a statement like "all intelligent people love PCs?" That's ridiculous.

And how were they "cherry picking" and "drawing incorrect conclusions"? Macs are way more expensive than PCs. This is a fact, unless you are to compare an old used Macbook to a new laptop.

@stargazer

They are not PCs evolved, they do not offer anything that you can't build yourself. And yes I am familiar with the Hackintosh, and I did in fact own Macs in the past, but stopped buying them when Jobs outlawed the clones. The Mac is nothing but an OS on a closed platform that limits your choice of hardware.

Incidentally, does anyone remember when they used to run on PowerPC chips and Apple claimed they were twice as fast as PCs, but then they switched to Intel and started saying the new Macs were twice as fast as the old PowerPC ones?

I disagree.  Show me a purchased or build yourself PC that can perform the function of "Target Disk Mode"?  This is a feature that no PC other then Apple built ones contain because it is unique to their design and firmware.   Hence this function.....which is extremely useful by the way,  is one of the things you pay for and get benefit of when you purchase an Apple designed PC.

Target disk mode isn't exactly necessary.  It is only made necessary by Apple's proprietary techniques when it comes to hardware/software troubleshooting.  If they would just let you have more options in the actual OS or be able to do more tinkering with the hardware, you wouldn't need target disk mode at all.  Remote desktop is plenty for doing stuff on a different PC from your PC.  And there are plenty of progarms that do very similar things on PC as target disk mode.
