All my Bro did was dual booted his MAC with XP, and now I want one for myself! :O |
Windows 7 = XP > Vista
And
Linux distros > Mac > Windows

For the general audience, hell no. Linux will never work for the general public until they figure out a new method instead of requiring most software to be installed by command line. That and networking them are just not very easy to do if you have no linux knowledge (ie. the general public).

I'm surprised it got this far without anyone saying anything.... Command line software installs aren't mandatory anymore. AFAIK most distros use a GUI interface, Ubuntu uses Synaptic Package Manager which lets you browse through your repos and get some information on a package before you install it, also installing all the required packages to make whatever you're installing work. Granted there may be some tweaking you may have to do with the command line, but the method you speak of exists.
Networking is easy too.... Wireless is the only bitch, LAN is as easy as being setup automagically when you install. :P

Wireless is what I meant by networking. And as far as software installs, Using ubuntu as my example here, you have to use the terminal/command line unless the software is included with the search feature thing you are describing. Thre are tons of software that I wanted and wasn't available in the preset list of stuff, which I had to install manually and was a huge pain.
This was as of 2 years ago as I have gotten rid of Ubuntu ever since those instances. Perhaps some of the newer versions released changed this?

A lot of the time adding more repositories solves the lack of software issue, but I think every release of Ubuntu has slowly improved on many of the main issues with Linux. For the everyday, email, browsing internet, porn, IM, youtube computer users, Ubuntu is perfect. There just isn't enough word of mouth or advertising to get people interested in giving it a try.
