Zack > Yuri Lowel.

Squall > Lloyd.

I don't care about Lloyd but Yuri Lowell is miles ahead better then Zack and Squall. Don't even put their names on the same sentence.

Well i did, an i'd do it again. :P

It's my opinion which you cant change so...yeah... sorry.

Zack > Squall > Yuri > Lloyd. (IMO) /end of story

But this thread is about what type of main character you would like to see more in jrpgs yet your trying to start a war on something this thread is not even about.

I haven't completed Lost Odyssey but I liked the depth that was brought to Kaim with the dream secquences. From star ocean I would like to see a main character like Crowe, Arumat, or even Bacchus.

"They think I'm crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy, it is I who am MAD!"

"Bolshe, luchshe, I kruche"

Ryudo( Grandia 2) best main Character EVER!!!

What I want in a main character...

I want the main character to be female.  This isn't about equality or eye-candy in any way.  It's simply that I'm tired of seeing guys getting the leading role in 95% of RPGs.  RPGs with more female leads would be wonderful.

I want the main character to be competent.  I want the main character to be good at whatever he/she does.  If you're a monster hunter then you should be good at killing monsters and know a lot about it.  If you're an air pirate, you should be good at being an air pirate.  If you're not good at anything then you're not good enough to be the star of this game.

I want the main character to make intelligent decisions.  Do not turn your back on the guy who is 99% likely to put a sword in it.  Do not go into the forbidden forest of doom without a plan.  Do not do stupid, face-palm-worthy things that the player knows you'll regret in less than 5 minutes.  I'd like writers to stop making RPG characters do stupid things because they themselves are too stupid to write their event into the plot in a clever way.

I want a main character that knows how to make an entrance.  We don't play RPGs about lumberjacks who sit in the wood chopping trees because they're boring (well, maybe MontanaHatchet does).  We play RPGs filled with excitement and cool, interesting stuff.  It's not enough just to do it right, you have to do it really right... with style.

I want the main character to be a hero.  I'm tired of down-to-earth characters.  I'm tired of emo/whiney characters.  I'm tired of anti-heroes.  I want someone of good character and morals who stands up for her beliefs and fights the good fight.   I want the legendary hero of old back.

Fixed and Agreed.

I prefer the main characters being guys over girls. everything else you stated i agree with though.

I'm currently playing Infinite Undiscovery, and god I'm hating Capell. He's not very bright and he whines a lot. Characters like that annoy the hell out of me. Male leads that looks like girls also annoy me, like the prince in Suikoden V.

I agree with you Words of Wisdom, you make a lot of strong points.
I haven't played many RPGs with female leads, but I really liked Lacryma Christi in Kartia (Kartia had a lot of great characters) and Gwendolyn and Velvet in Odin Sphere. Then again FFX-2 is an example of how wrong you can go with female leads.

Some of my personal favorite male leads in jRPGs are Ramza Beoulve from FF:Tactics, he has good morals, does the best he can for what he believes in and he's not stupid nor whiney. SRPGs tend to have better lead characters than traditional RPGs in my opinion. Not only male, but also female.
I also really like Ashley Riot, he actually acts like a grown man and with issues I actually care about and that he doesn't whine about. I also like young, good spirited and naive characters like Justin from Grandia and Sora from Kingdom Hearts, just because they tend to be very charming. Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears is also a strong and interesting male lead.

MOTHERFUCKING FLINT IN MOTHERFUCKING MOTHER 3.

Makes up for it all.
