Forums - Nintendo - My Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in Depth Review

overrated... 9.1 is my rating MP1 > MP3

Around the Network

good review. Congrats on the 100%, I know that is not easy.

Actually getting 100% is much easier in MP3 than previous Primes thanks to the Chozo observatory in SkyTown marking upgrades on your map.

Thanks, I'm sure everyone wanted to hear a score from someone who hasn't played the game. Any thoughts on Super Mario Galaxy while you're at it?

TruckOSaurus is right, 100% complete is much easier this time. It still certainly takes time and some creative puzzle solving, but you can use satelites in the Chozo Observatory to mark their locations on anything except the Vallhalla.

Here's my review (figured this is the best thread for it, yes?). I based my categories off of IGN's, although I decide on scoring differently.

Presentation - 10 - Undoubtedly the best Metroid Prime title; the way the game flows cannot be beaten. So, so smooth, the backtracking of this game didn't seem so tedious and obnoxious as it did in previous Metroid titles. The only bothersome thing was those darned Phazoids... and possibly the load screens (which were very beautiful and many probably wouldn't realize they WERE load screens... but if only they were interactive!).

Graphics - 9.8 - People try saying that you have to rate a game based on overall graphics from system to system, and that's bullocks. If that were so, then Pokémon Diamond should have gotten a .5 on graphics. Corruption is definitely the best thing out for Wii yet, and it definitely shows that great looking games are possible on Wii. However, I couldn't stand watching the General talk for all that long, and as much as Gandrayda was awesome, she'd look kinda ridiculous when she'd latch onto Samus. As for Samus, if viewed from the wrong angle, she was kinda ugly. Faces could've used a little more attention.

Sound - 10 - I can't say I ever got tired of any of the sound - music, atmospheric noises, Samus's grunts and gasps, or voice acting. Any of it. Everything was wonderfully matched, and sounded magnificent. Not to mention some rooms, it was impossible just by looking to tell when all the Pirates were defeated, but you could always tell by the music. ^_^

Gameplay - 10 - I often would get + and - mixed up when trying to go to the ship command visor, then end up going into Hypermode, but that's of no fault to Retro. They did a wonderful job with the controls, and most certainly showed that first-person controls on the Wii are unbeatable - except maybe with a mouse. Wii Mouse + Nunchuck in the future, maybe? Either way, Retro hit it on the spot. I'm going to find it tough to go back to playing dual-analog (probably the same way it's tough for dual-analogists to go back and play a N64 FPS). THEN comes the gameplay. The game flowed so fluidly. Retro fixed every single problem that existed in previous Metroid Prime games, and then some. Perfect, perfect, perfect!

Lasting Appeal - 8.5 - Sadly, to me, it takes a WHOLE lot for some really lasting appeal. I'll probably play through and collect the last 10 items, then read all the logbook entries, and be bored with the game after that for a while. I'll play MP1 and MP2, then come back and maybe be able to play through it again, but really, I rarely pick up a game after I beat it (funny, too, because I keep every game I enjoy because I plan on playing it again anyhow). However, Prime DOES have extras - but with no multiplayer, those extras won't keep me picking it up that often. If they even just slapped together Hunters' multiplayer mode, modded to fit Corruption, that'd have been more than enough to keep me coming back. Oh well.
HOWEVER, as an absolutely WONDERFUL part of the Metroid Prime trilogy, this brings the replay value back up. The three games are wonderful, and Corruption is definitely my favourite of all three. Additionally, I actually have a desire to collect all the upgrades this time, as the game presents you with a way to actually KNOW where they are instead of just roaming around. This is a great, great inclusion. I fully intend to play through all three Prime games soon, back-to-back.

Overall - 9.66 (average of all ratings).

Notes: I understand that they opted out of a multiplayer mode in order to perfect the controls, graphics, and other gameplay mechanics, and that's great. But, let's face it, it's true. Most games that don't have multiplayer really don't get much gameplay after you beat them. As a huge Metroid fan, I guarantee I'll be playing it more, but, for crying out loud, I've played more online Hunters than I have the main quest. Online multiplayer is a great, great thing to increase replay value of a game. They should release a multiplayer-only Corruption disc that uses your savegame file from Corruption to unlock extras on it. Production costs would be pretty darn slim, as maps wouldn't be hard to throw together, they already have the engine and controls completely figured, etc. They could even include an unlockable "Hunters" mode where you play with Hunters weapons, as the other Hunters, etc. It'd retail as only $15 - which WOULD make a profit (given low production costs), especially since it'd bolster MP3 main-game sales. The two would soar together (and when Nintendo starts the Players' Choice discounts, I guarantee MP3 would be included and sell cheaper, thus bolstering both sales again). Sure, people wouldn't be happy about paying $65 for the whole lot, but honestly, it'd be worth it, since the extra $15 for extra content is totally optional AND, when comparing any other FPS singleplayer with Metroid, they ALL fall enormously short, so you're paying a little more for a LOT more.

GUIDE TO BUYING
BUY IT NOW! - Are you a Metroid fan? Or a fan of adventure, puzzle, and/or first-person games (at least two of the above)? As a guaranteed member of the Top 10 Games of 2007, this title is a must-have for any core gamers who are into games that make you think. Don't wait!

Wait until it's cheaper - Like Metroid games, but never got that excited about them? Into first-person games, but prefer them to be more fast-paced? Like puzzle and adventure games, but they're not exactly your forte? You'll definitely like Corruption, but probably won't see $50 worth it. Wait until you can get it used, or Nintendo releases it as a Player's Choice title.

Rent it - Are you really good at puzzle and adventure games, and tend to work your way through quickly? Do you tend to find that most games have low replay value? Or are you just really skeptical about Corruption as a whole? This game is definitely worth playing, but maybe owning it isn't worth the investment for you.

Don't bother - What, are you nuts? Is Toy Story 2 for Gamecube your favourite game? Do you get excited at the thought of playing Micro Machines for PS1? Don't bother with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It's too epic for you.

I just beat the game last night, 100% for me as well.

My overall impresions are very similar to Naz's. I'll definately be playing it again in Hypermode, but probably not for another month that way it will seem somewhat fresh again.

I am not playing hyper mode just yet. I'm currently playing Rune Factory on DS, which will keep me entertained for a long time hehe.

Good job Naz. I actually would rate it 9.5 also, but on par (for the time when it was released) with MP1, but better now (of course).

Best console FPS controls, QFT. Can't wait for a good multiplayer FPS. (Which is wierd, because I hate FPS, usually.)

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Yeah I agree steven, it's on par for MP1 when it was released, but better now. It was a great game to end the trilogy with, and I'm glad it went out on a high note. I really hope that scene at the end (not going to give any spoilers) means a new 3D Metroid series is being made.
