Forums - General - Rise of atheism: 100,000 Brits seek 'de-baptism'

Religion is a faith based system of belief for worshipping a "Creator of Divine Origins" So obviously it isnt a religion.

So its most likely a 100,000 people "disrespecting" *cough cough* a common faith.

IS there some reason you feel religion should be automatically immune to questions such as highwaystar101s?

Because i feel that it is a perfectly valid question when Atheists/Humanists are repatedly being asked to justify their positions all over the world.

It actually made me smile that you pointed this out lol

I've asked the question in 7 or 8 threads now and no-one ever answers me... just like no-one has answered yet.

OK, for all you believers in god who are intent on asking atheists to back up why they don't believe in god let me ask you a question...

Prove to me, using sound evidence, that your god exists and is the correct one to follow!!!

beward highway, you are starting to get "out there" again.

This event either means atheism is a religion, or 100,000 people are disrespecting a common faith with a basic f*ck you.

Pick your poison.

Either atheists are intolerant (peaceful secular society my ass)

or atheism is a religion.

Neither of those make sense. Luckily it's irrelevant. Do you believe in Santa clause? If not, is that a religion? If a group decides to get together and form an anti-santa clause group with a set dogma, then that could be a religion. But I wouldn't be part of it simply because I don't believe in Santa clause. Even if a few atheists somehow made a religion, out of their beliefs (which would still be nonsensical) the absence of belief wouldn't somehow become a religion. That's nonsense. basically you're trying to take the actions of a few and apply them to a mass of disjointed people who have little in common except for the absence of belief in something. How many people that don't believe in leprechauns also murdered people? Millions I'd be willing to bet. People who don't believe in leprechauns=murderers.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

So you are saying it's just 100,000 christian-hating atheists giving the one finger salute?

Well... according to Peter Pan, everytime a person says they don't believe in fairies, one of them drops dead... so... maybe?

Did I do what they did? Did millions of other atheists around the world do it? Do millions of other atheists even know about this or even care?

Apparently you started to reply before I edited my post to add this in

That makes no sense. So a group of atheists in the UK want to be taken off a list that doesn't exist for their own psychological reasons. What does that have to do with me? How am I linked to this in any way?

Sounds pretty stupid. It wasn't done to harm them in any way, it was done in their interest for what their parents thought was best. Seems these people are just pissed at religion in general and want to give it a big F-U.

No I'm not That's why I said 100,000. But I'm not saying there couldn't be more, as you might be indicating, I don't know.

I think you are starting to babble. Lechrechauns... Murders.. All remind me of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leprechaun_(film)

I'm glad :D

Too many people feel some sort of guilt when challenged about why they "dare question it".

I've never had that problem thankfully as i feel an inquisitive mind and a willingness to learn are the 2 greatest gifts someone can recieve from their genes.

Wanna know the most intolerant thing I've done? It's quite funny IMHO.

I was walking through the local town centre and there were 2 "christians" ( I use the term loosely here due to a passage in the bible specifically stating that people who act in the way they were will not be going to Heaven, unfortunately i have forgotten which book, chapter and verse.) with one of them holding up a 7ft tall cross and the other shouting at everyone that they were going to Hell, without even speaking to people to find out what they believed before yelling at them, this was upsetting children, intimidating old ladies and generally making life difficult for almost everyone in the area.

Then, as I was wearing my usual skater get up of Bolt jeans (a baggy pair of black jeans effectively), a Cradle Of Filth T-Shirt and some chains hanging from the waist of my jeans, they decided to start screaming at me. telling me how I would:

"Burn in Hell, You shall repent but God will not listen, it will be too late because you will have lived in Sin and you shall deserve your punishment"

At which point i yelled back as loud as i could:

"In that case HAIL SATAN"

They then went extremely red, became flustered, packed up and left. Now i ask, was that MY intolerance? Saving innocent people from being abused, upset and intimidated? Was I in the wrong?

Or were they?

EDIT - People seem to have missed this during the flurry of posting. It refers to the person who said "Atheists are a religion OR they are people saying Fuck You to christianity"

You know, regarding the original post...

For myself, I think I'd find it pretty silly to seek "de-baptism" or whatever. But I can understand why some people might want to do it.

People generally want to express themselves in the world, and dislike it when things are done to them, or choices are made for them, without their consent. A person's religion/belief system/etc. is fairly personal; I can understand not liking being "included" into a religion without consent, especially if you later find that you disagree with that religion.

And, when a person is a genuine minority in a society and looked down upon for it (and I feel that atheists are often looked down upon in western society), they sometimes like to reverse it, to take on their minority status as a badge of honor instead.

Rather than this being "intolerant activity," can we also see this as individuals expressing themselves, and taking pride in their own beliefs?
