Forums - Sony - Multiplatformers: Microsoft vs. Sony

this article shows a very positive sign for sony regarding sales on multiplatform games. if this pattern continues, '10 is looking like the year where sony will start outgainging the 360 in sales for sure.

Hmm, I'm not so sure about that. At first, it looks convincing. but there are two issues I have with the conclusion.

Firstly, that graph doesn't seem like a linear line of best fit is appropriate. perhaps a decreasing logarithm would be more appropriate.

Secondly. Who decided that these games were the ones to consider? THis is most likely cherry picked to prove the point that the author wanted to make

^on your second point, im guessing they are just the top selling games. thatd be most logical.

Perhaps. But if you look at the games on the left side of the graph we see hockey, american football, baseball and other 'American games'

On the right hand side we see soccer, racing, and even a timed PS3 exclusive (mirrors edge was timed PS3 exclusive right?) ie European games

Also, welcome to the site, and I applaud you on the fact that your first thread is worth an interesting discussion :)

Mirror's Edge had a simultaneous release for PS360. It was the Windows version that came later.

The only thing I can see from this graph is that:

a. European games sell better on the PS3 usually (like scottie saw)
b. That as "Time" passed (no actual time increments given), the PS3 user base grew. Thus the overall percentage of people on the 360 buying the game as opposed to people with a PS3 buying the game naturally declined.

When this graph started (beginning 08) the PS3 stood at 57% the total sales of hardware as compared to the 360 (9.16 million and 16.01 million respectively). Today, after a full year of sales, the numbers are 21.4 million PS3 and 29.6 million 360. Guess what happened to the percentage of total PS3 sales compared to the Xbox 360!?! It went up to 72% even after selling less than the 360 last year.

So, since this chart is based solely on percentages, this shows you why it is declining, and why this is not only absolutely normal, but this indicates that the PS3 software sales is not catching up anywhere near what the author intended it to look like.
