Really?  'far' cheaper?   Hardly.   By the time you get PS2 accessories and possible 360 accessories you are easily spending as much or more.  Plus you get more franchises that remained on Playstation with a PS3 than you would with a 360.    And, it's all self contained in one unit.  No swapping.

 

What accessories? No need for Wifi,No need for a hard drive,the best JRPG on a next gen console.

ps2. Without live, the 360 loses tons of points and no current gen console can compete with the ps2's library save for FPS fans (which I doubt you are since you don't/won't be playing online)

How much do you think memory cards are?  You can get a 64MB for a little over $7 and that's all you ever need.

As for extra controllers, I guess I was unaware of the PS3 that came with more than controller...

And I'm not saying the PS2 library is bad or that it suddenly turned bad when this gen started, it's just he has options with the 360 and no options with the PS2.

My point was pretty simple.  If he wants RPGs and action games?  That is PS2's bread and butter.   Arguably the best library of games available?  Has an SDTV and doesn't play games online?  PS2 is a great choice and probably the most preferable choice.  Between all systems.   Although at 130 dollars plus a memory card and an extra controller. He is looking at a decent entry point regardless.   

He might be wiser to just dive and get a backwards compatible PS3 and have everything included for him.  Especially if he isn't a big online gamer,  It's probably a better future investment anyways.  No sense in paying for Xbox Live if you're a very occassional online gamer but it's a nice option to have. 

I believe the PS2s library (currently) is superior to anything that the 360 or PS3 provide.  PS3 does contain some of the better franchises from PS2 however that the 360 doesn't.   So it might be a better decision for him to take that plunge and go for an HD console that allows him to play all the PS2 games as well.

You dont need an HD TV to enjoy better looking graphics,and he will eventually upgrade to an HD TV.

You dont have to pay for Xbox Live,you can still download and buy stuff.

Also Xbox has Arcade games some good games he might miss or want to play,also achievements.

 

Also everything i just said ^ can be applied to PS3,but the PS3 b/c cost too much.

I haven't read the entire thread, but the PS2 wins in RPGs, while the 360 wins in anything regarding local multiplayer.

They really aren't that debatable.  I mean understably game library preferences differ (and therefore can never be 'proven' or fact)   but if you took a poll it's not even close. A vast majority would take the PS2 library over 360 or PS3 offerings. ESPECIALLY in the two given categories.

And yes you really do need an HD TV to enjoy HD games.  Otherwise your text is screwed up and hardly readable.

 

He will eventually upgrade to an HD TV.  The point is,  it's all about the here and now for him.  I suggested getting a PS3 W/ BC because it overall makes the most sense as far as I'm concerned.  He can play the great library of PS1/PS2 games. (Especially ones the genres that he enjoys).  Still be able to play a majority of next gen games,  while still maintaining a connection with several popular Playstation franchises that are still only Playstation based.  

Yeah you don't have to pay for Xbox Live and you can download stuff, but you can't play online with your friends.  (Which is really the point, isn't it?).   For someone who doesn't value or put much value into Online gaming. I think the PS3 provides a better choice because it's simple.  It's there for him to use (For free) at his will.   Maybe he wants to dive just a little bit into online gaming?  Xbox Live is a little over priced for the usage he would potentially be getting out of it.

And the PSN has some good games that he might miss out on and also have trophies.

 

I understand the PS3 comes at a higher cost,  but again when you factor in the ability to play PS2 games (Which was the premise of the question).  I think it's an easy answer.  He can get his cake and eat it too,  by getting a PS3.   If he gets a 360 and wants to play some of the best games created in their respective genres (PS2 games) he will also need to add on the cost of a PS2.
