Forums - Gaming - Which was better: Nintendo 64 or Playstation?

I just have too many fond memories of the N64, not all of them old memories either.

Just about a year ago I had an absolutley awesome couple of nights playing through Pokemon Snap with my mates.

Pokemon Snap, Ocarina of Time, SM64, Majoras Mask, Goldeneye, Harvest Moon and Conkers are well and truly enough to make N64 one of the greatest consoles I have ever played.

JRPGs and quantity of quality vs. FPS and multiplayer ...

It really would have been tragic to lose out on either console.
FF7/8/9/Tactics, Castlevania SOTN, Einhander, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, Bushido Blade, etc. etc.

Mario 64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Wave Race 64, Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, Zelda OoT/MM, Conker's Bad Fur Day, etc. etc.

The only thing stopping me from saying N64 is Final Fantasy. But I think I'm gonna have to say N64 anyway.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

when I was 12 I really wanted a PS1 I had all the games I wanted picked out and begged my parents for about 11 months. I made sure they knew what it was and were to get it. Well when Christmas came I went down and found the biggest box with my name on it and waited til I could open it. finally I started ripping threw the paper and what did I find to my surprise...............What? a N64? apparently the guy at wal mart told my mom the the N64 was more durable because It had cartridges and not scratchable CD's I was confused but still the wost part was they gave the game to my brother so I couldn't be a control freak with my new toy WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?! well two years later with my own money I went and bought my PSX and FF7,8 but after I beat all the great RPG's my PSX went back into it little hole it crawled out of and I went back to playing goldeneye, perfect dark, Mario 64, banjo, DK 64 MK64, wave race, and Battle Tanx none of those games have a deep evolving story but I still play them to this day.

and lets not forget about Zelda Oot, MM

N64

PS1 is why I started disliking Sony in the first place since I bought a first generation PS1 which of course overheated right after the warranty ran out. I will never buy a single Sony product again except maybe a movie which unfortunately they have some decent ones.

How in the HELL did you overheat your PS1!!! I left mine on for weeks at a time or even 2 months when I first got it and had no memory card. It still works I just put it in a box sometime last year. I mean the thing is held together with duct tape and a few minor repairs here and the but I abused the hell out of it. It was like that pair of sneakers you were never able to part with. :P

Bad design... the first wave of PS1 had the laser lens way close to the adapter...

Second wave PS1 had the problem solved AFAIK.

Mine died too...

On topic... I had both... and despite the lack of games, N64 is my favourite console of all time (and I play games since the Atari2600 came out).

SM64, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong, Perfect Dark, Zelda, Turok 2, Shadowman, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.... they were so superior to the ps1 games It was not even fair (I think shadowman maybe was on PS1 too...)

As I don't like FF or MGS games (don't think they are bad either, just not my type), the only games I remember with such passion are Silent Hill1 and Soul Edge

Man I must have been one lucky basterd. Since I have bought every system since I was old enough at launch (I used to sell alot of lemonade in Chicago during the late spring/summer/early fall). (excluding the 360 & DS)

Me too (not in Chicago, but still), i did lawns, sold candy that wasn't available at the school at a higher price, and after that when i enter the U, i moved to some serious work, everything to buy my consoles at launch, and til today i never had a problem with anyone, obviously the Ninty ones and the PS3 are bulletproof, but i got my PS1 and PS2 and never had a problem, my PSP doesn't have any dead pixels and my Megadrive & Dreamcast are flawless... With my luck so far a 360 should work fine, but i don't wanna push it jejejeje...

I owned both, and still own both. Outside of a handful of PS1 games, most of the library has aged very poorly, where I still play my N64 regularly.

Graphically, there is no comparison between the two. The only games on the PS1 that look "better" tend to have pre-rendered backgrounds.

Ever play Quake on the PS1? Awful. The system truly couldn't handle real 3-d games. N64 brought us the first great console fps games, and so much more.

Also, to the guy who said the 2600 had analog control, it did not. Show me analogue anything on the 2600. You couldn't control the speed of a character by pressing more or less in a direction. That system was digital.

And while the 5200 was "analog", the controls were so awful that atari had to scrap them.

The N-64 launched the first truly good analog controls. And sorry if you think they were bad, 'cause they weren't. ;)

Also, does anybody see the resemblance to the wii remote in the n-64 controls?

For me, it comes down to:

Super Mario 64, Mariokart and ZeldaOoT vs MGS, FF7, Xenogears and Symphony of the night.

Since that's the case, I'll give the edge to the PS1... though I did enjoy the N64. Hard decision.

Nintendo 64 was better in graphics, loading times, and controller (it was the original analog stick + rumble), while PS1 had more games and better media (CD that is cheaper for developers and more storage).

The controller was the worst part, anyone who who say it's better due to it has nostalgia gogoles on. Also, it was not the first with analog, nor the first with rumble.

In fact most game consoles from the 19 fucking 70s using an analog stick. Up to and including stuff like atari 5200 and 2600. In fact the reason it stopped being used is because of the popularity of the NES controller, and sega controller, even though analog was much better for most things.

Rumble wasn't included with the 64 controllers either, it was a add-on so that point is moot. 64 would be the first console to have rumble, edging out PS1 by 4 months. Both were working on rumble feedback but nintendo rushed it. Rumble did exist on PC however before then.

I find it funny, people like to say nintendo "brings" new ideas. Rumble? No. d-pad? No. Analog? No. Motion control? No. List goes on and on.

Motion control was nothing new with WII, hell it wasn't even the first console to do it. PS1 had a third party controller which worked on 4 axis, which could be used with any game, hell most stores had a deal, buy warhawk get it half off.

Gaming libary I loved 64, it had so many memorable games I wouldn't trade for the world. But does it deserve to win? No. Not even close. I hate it really, everytime someone mentions a nintendo consoles, you'll notice something... A certain string of words come up, such as mario, and zelda, repeated many times. They are icons, there games are great, but it's sad it's what most people can only name on a console. What was good on n64?

mario 64!

Zelda OOT and majora's mask!

Mario party!

Paper mario!

Mario Kart!

Not to say thats bad, but where is the variety? Sure goldeneye existed and a few other ones, but for every good game that didn't have mario or zelda in the title, existed 5 more on the PS1, which were either better or just as good.(Not saying goldeneye wasn't the best FPS of the time, it was)... But it's weird.

Even now, what great WII games are there? Zelda twilight princess! Mario Galaxy! Paper mario.... mario kart.... metroid....

It's not a bad thing, but it's the same stuff every generation with a few other noteworthy releases. The PS1 had a libary twice the size of 64, and on average much more games rated above 85, more AAA games. This isn't an opinion which was better, PS1 won, both in sales, and reviews.

You are aware that from the n64 on, the rumble feature, the analog controllers and the 4 controller ports became standards.  Did they invent them no, but they did make them the standard.   Yes Sony came out with the Rumble feature shortly after Nintendo, of course that was after they saw them demo of the rumble feature at one of the trade shows (e3 or spaceworld)  The playstation's controllere was just a simple evolution over the SNES controller (nothing wrong with that by the way it was great).  On a side note the Gamecube also perfected the wireless controller the following generation which became standard, again didn't invent it but perfected it.

Yes the ps1 had more quality games but when you have hundreds of more games than the n64 that is going to happen.  Most 3rd parties left Nintendo for the cheaper cd format, so for the number of games the n64 had the amount of classics is amazing.  Of course Mario and Zelda games are going to be stated as the top games beacuase they are always great games.  Mario 64 made 3d games popular and the Ocarnia of Time is still considered one of the best games ever.  Lets not forget Super Smash Brothers had its first game on the n64 as well as Mario Party.(Mario Party games aren't great but the first one was pretty damn fun back in the day)  GoldenEye was one of the first great shooters ever on a video game console, who knows maybe we don't see microsoft in the market if Nintendo didn't show a shooter can sell 8 million copies.  The wrestling games on the 64 are considered some of the best wrestling games ever, as they were so easy to just jump in and play and quite a blast to play as well.  Everything Rare made was awesome( both Banjo Kazooies, GoldenEye, BlastCorps, Conker, Donkey Kong 64, Jet Force Jemini, Diddy kong racing, Perfect Dark all classic games)  Acclaim made some very good games as well with the Turok and extreme g series.  Micschief Makers, Wave Race, the amazing Star Fox game, my favorite hocky game of all time the Wayne Gretzky 3d hocky as well as NBA hangtime were all awesome.  Not to mention one of the best ps1 games came to the n64 in Resident Evil 2.  So many great games that I can not name them all the Kobe Bryant basketball games, Paper Maio, Goaman, and so many more games.

The ps1 was a great system as well.  I loved Resident Evil 1 and 2.  Everything Square made on the system was great especially Final fantasy 7&9, Chrono Cross, and Valkyre Profile.  I loved the Tomb Raider games, Metal Gear solid and Tony Hawk.  Outside of that I can't remember much else that stood out.

Both Systems were great the N64 just topped it in every way from my perspective.  It comes down to whoever owned just a ps1 will say that was the best system and there were quite a few more ps1 owners than n64 owners.  Whoever owned just the n64 will say that system was the best.  Whoever owned both system are really only the ones that should comment on this topic.  I can see why someone would say one is better than the other but really both systems were really top notch and it was a great generation to be a gamer.  The first time I played Super Mario 64 and the first time I played Resident Evil 1 were some of the biggest "awe yeah" moments in gaming, showing such a great jump from where we were in the SNES Genesis days.

To be fair rumble wasn't used on PC much, it was used in a trade show to show force feedback in games, sony and nintendo saw that and started development on it. It wasn't sony seen what nintendo had, they both seen it, sony may have not seen it as a big deal till nintendo pushed it's rumble pack out but still. Also you can't really argue "standard" really. Just because something makes something standard doesn't mean it's good. VHS edged out beta, did it deserve to win? Beta had better quality, cheaper to produce, players cost the same, better sound quality... Why did it lose? Well sony didn't want porn on beta, and it lost. If it wasn't for that ONE thing, people would have beta now, not VHS. Things like this are present everywhere. Though to my knowledge yes the 64 is the first console that has 4 ports... Nintendo did make a lot of mistakes though. The controller is shapped god awful on 64, though GC controller is still my favorite controller, and they used mini-dvds when they should of used DVDs, they had no reason not to. Though it did a lot of things I liked, such as the upgradable 64 ram etc. Though 99% of things it brings, fail, and are never standard. Only thing I even think it pushed a lot was the 4 ports, and really only nintendo consoles used that, dreamcast, and xbox.

Though you are wrong. I never owned a PS1 in my life. I was a nintendo fanboy, I always liked nintendo, till the WII of course. I only owned a 64, nes, snes, and ps2 before this generation myself. That and a PC. Though even with all of that, you can't deny PS1 was better. It was, even if I had more fun on 64, PS1 was better. PS1 had great first party, and 64 had better first party, but the third party basically abandoned nintendo.

ill have to say Ps1 because i had so many more games for Ps1 then N64. I loved both systems to death but hands down Ps1 Crash+Spyro+Ape escape = HOLY SHIT!

I always thought the gamecubes use of mini discs was so that we didn't have the god-awful load times of the PS2.
