It only reads discs I already installed half the time and anything that isn't installed is an instant DRE.

You should try to Red Ring it; put that three year coverage to good use.

Otherwise it sounds like it isn't good for much other than spare parts without a working DVD drive.

I loaned my good friend my XBOX360 so he could play Gears with his friends. I would not lend my PS3 though because I am currently addicted to Killzone 2 (Just picked up Red Alert 3) and use the free online features to play my multi-plats. I am too cheap to pay for XBOX LIVE! I think that happy gamers are constructive citizens and commend you for doing your part to help your friend.
