I would be for this, most definitely.

Yeah, and then you'd have to make do with a higher crime rate (which would cost taxpayers money anyway, due to public goods being vandalised, higher costs of policing, and greater numbers of prisons, prison staff, etc), and when unemployed people have no money, they can't spend, which means that shop keepers will suffer from lower demand. It's not as simple as "they don't work, don't give them money", there are benefits to the system, if there wasn't, then the system wouldn't be in place. |
yeah your probably right. I said that before I thought of the negative affects it would have. The liquor and cigarette stores would really suffer if people had no more welfare!
If we had labor camps, we wouldn't need well fare. We could just put everyone without a job to work.
Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

You people arguing about government regulating welfare do realize it exists already in some form? Food Stamps can't be used to purchase a pre-prepared meal in Louisiana. You can buy all the seperate ingredients, but not the finished product. This money obviously can't be used for non-food products either. I am going to have to check the specifics again, but I am 90% certain that the government deals directly with the landlords for paying rent in certain welfare cases (these revolve around projects exclusively to my knowledge). But please do continue talking about how it needs to be done or should never have happened.
Accept government assistance. Accept government control. Big brother loves to watch over you when you come underneath their all-pervasive wing of caring.
Not against the idea, in all reality. If your going to take their money, you might as well submit to their whims. I hate government handouts because it leads to this stuff, but it's also the fact of government: The more they give, the more they take. The less control you have over your own life and liberty, the more control they have over your life and liberty.
IMO, taking away any and all cash-based forms of welfare would be best. The govt. should also end food stamps for the most part, and focus on helping food banks assist the needy/hungry...It's much cheaper, because most food banks run on volunteers. The food bank I worked at for about 3 years assisted about 200 hungry families per week in my area for a grand total of $400 a month in expenditures. I think $400 for feeding 800 individual families is pretty good, and is probably much cheaper than what it costs for food stamps for the same number of families.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
Aren't we talking about people who got laid off? In a time when its REALLY HARD to find another decent job? We aren't talking about slacker bums right now. Seriously...
WTF you try losing your job right now and desperately trying to find another job that is good enough to pay whatever payments you have to make... and then having the govt crawling up your ass about it.

Ah yes. How ironic that people not on well fare can get routinely drug tested through employers.

I am all for mandatory drug testing for people on welfare and unemployment.
It's bad enough that I see people that smoke and complain about not having money but it's even worse when people take welfare and unemployment checks and spend them on drugs.
Drugs are one of the dumber things you can do anyways. I've seen so many people throw their lives away because they thought they didn't have a problem.
^ but the majority don't. And the people who buy marijuana... do you even know how cheap that is? apparently not. You can get the money for it by selling off a game you've played through.
