Forums - Sony - GDC 09: God of War will not be locked at 60 FPS

You know, if this game renders 1080p most of the time, and 60fps some of the time and 30fps the rest it will be outperforming almost all other major AAA titles on PS3/360.

Most big titles are actually full of 'tricks' compromises to balance making them look really good with the very real limitations of either consoles' power.

CoD4, Halo, etc. etc. all render well below 1080p native and rely on upscaling and other such devices to look the way they do on the screen.

This gen a lot of games have been driven by a desire to get close to the look of high end PC games, particularly driven by the huge swing (particularly in US) to playing titles that would absolutely have been PC only during the PS2/Gamecube era.

However neither console, so far, can produce such visuals at the mythical 1080p native for such titles.

Other titles have been 1080p or very close, such as Wipeout, which is 'mostly' 1080p with the odd bit of trickery here and there.

Personally if GoW3 manages a variable 60fs / 30 fps and it's well managed, then I'll be happy. Given how good games like CoD4 can look at their resolution I'm happy GoW3 will look fantastic.

OT I'm not sure about the 'zipper' feature revealed recently - I prefer my insides on the inside really.

Hmmm, this still bugs me: how can some of you guys not notice a drop in framerate? I understand you can't see a thing from 60 to 58 or something like that, but below 50... It's practically impossible to not notice it.

Why do people still claim there is no difference between 480p and 1080p?

Which current HD game runs at 1080p?

Even most HD games run below 720p most of the time. It's called upscaling, that's all.

Why are you acting like this is not an issue with current HD games? How about you look at the situation in an unbiased way?

I was talking about movies with that comment, and I think it's ridiculous that you complain about framerates for these amazing looking games.

If I pay you $200 or $400 can you draw 60 frames per second for 10 years? I think not.

Well, that's exactly the problem. I pay big bucks for getting stuff that is supposed to blow my mind. Explain to me why some HD games can pull it off, i.e. Call of Duty 4/5, Ninja Gaiden 2 (there's just one intensive part in the game, and it's on that stairway with a million of enemies coming at you. Epic by the way), etc? Is it the developers trying too hard when they know the current generation of consoles can't handle teh grafx? I mean, the 360 and the PS3 are not PCs (yet)! If you want my opinion, it would be better to remove a few graphic effects just to make the game run well and blow the mind of "Wii boys" like me. You know what I'm saying? If developers can pull it off with last gen hardware, why can't developers do it on the 360 and PS3?

With that said, we've yet to see the final product for GoW III, and I hope it will blow my mind! ^^

Oh, and that bolded part didn't make any sense. o_O

The bold is to remind you that the console you bought can do amazing things that a human couldn't dream of doing, for example rendering a battle scene at 60 fps.... And I was wondering if I paid you "big bucks" if you could do the same as my PS3... Obviously you couldnt.

You're putting the Frames Per Second on a pedistal(sp?), you're acting as if they are this godly thing and if you miss just one it's the end of the world. To me 60fps in these games is quite an accomplishment even if it dips at some points.

Perhaps it's because I know more about the hardware and understand how difficult these tasks are, that is why I am not bothered by it. Perhaps you should be paying more attention to what you're doing in the game than how many frames you're seeing.

Just think about it for a second, think about all the things that go on in GOW, the amazing lighting, the physics and particle effects, the quickness of the characters, all these changes happening every single second. It truly is impressive.

Now take a peek at your Wii, limited physics, extremely limited lighting and shadows. It too is a Next Generation console, so if you are to be disappointed in anything it should be in it. The PS3 and 360 have to do 100's if not 1000's of more things in rendering a game than the Wii, and the 360 costs LESS than it.

I believe you missed the part where I said that I can still enjoy games even if there are apparent framedrops. It just saddens me to see this happening still in 2009 with new and more powerful hardware. There is a limit though, and like I said, if there are just a few dips every 30-60 minutes of gameplay, I won't mind, but if they don't fix the whole ogre thing when the game releases, I'll be damn sad! o_O

And at the bolded... yes? I know it is. You think I'd prefer Dreamcast graphics or something? I'm happy with what we're getting, I just wished it could be more.

Also, yes, I put Frames Per Second on a pedestal. Having played a ton of PC games, I did whatever I could to lower the graphics at a good enough level to at least keep my framerate constant in any games I've played. The second I see drops in a certain part, I change my settings again for that certain part and then put them back as they were before entering it (Crysis for example, the snow area). I can't stand playing laggy games where there are framedrops every minute, especially if my controls have input lag because of it.

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

What most people don't realize, is that a constant 30 fps plays a lot smoother than 60 fps with drops to 45 fps. I hope the developeres realize this though, and lock the game at 30 fps.

Yeah, I was talking "in general." ;)

Wipeout HD would like a word.

I see your Wipeout HD with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue at 1080p native @ 60fps.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

How many of you understand the real difference between 30 fps and 60 fps?

60 fps is 16.67ms of processing time per frame.
30 fps is 33.33ms of processing time per frame.

Which one do you think will look higher quality, given the same engine technology? The one with 2x the framerate of a TV, or the one that uses 2x the horsepower to render an individual frame, and the same framerate as TV?

30fps means the game is doing a lot of cool stuff, or the engine was written poorly.  Given SCE's studios general quality level, I would say its the former, and not the latter.  Most people who think they can see the difference between "30 fps" and "60 fps" are actually noting the difference between "20 fps" and "30 fps" -- because, yes, accurately telling the difference between 30 and 60 is usually something only trained professionals can do without an on-screen counter, no matter how awesome you think your eyes are, relative to the rest of the human race.

A heck of a lot of games run at 20 fps, and people don't whine about it, although 30 fps is a clearly notable boost over 20.  60 fps is a minor benefit usually only afforded to games that are simplistic, in terms of rendering, like racers and space games, or PSN/XBLA grade titles.

Off the top of my head, the only games I can even think of, that run at 60 fps this gen, are some racers and little downloadable titles, which is exactly what I would suspect.  Anything else that runs at 60 is going to be called "last gen" by the reviewers, for its low-grade graphics.

That sucks, tho im sure the game will be awesome.

@ Mirson

*facepalm*

So now the video tells the whole story?

Uh...I was judging the video, and the dips were very noticable. I'm not saying the final product will be like this, or at least I hope not. It looks very annoying. Give me something like MGS4 where it from 30 to 60 fps and vice versa without being noticable or annoying.

@Procrastinato. I must have Kal-El eyes, cause I sure can notice the difference, in any game. Always have been able to. Did you ever play RallySport Challenge 2 on the X-Box. The game ran at 60 fps while playing, but the replays of races dropped to about 30fps. Some my of friends could see it too, some couldn't. It blew my mind that some people couldn't see it.

- "If you have the heart of a true winner, you can always get more pissed off than some other asshole."

MGS4 didn't run at 60 fps. It never did.
