Sony Continues Japan Dominance
Posted on March 25, 2009

Sony keeps on rockin' in the Land of the Rising Microchip and Manga, Japan. We reported earlier that the Playstation 3 had outsold its competitors and happily for Sony and PS3 owners everywhere, this is a trend that seems to be continuing for the forseeable future. The latest hard ware figures to come out of Japan and specifically Famitsu is that Sony's God of Techliness (is that even a word? it is now!), has been laying a whuppin' in terms of sheer sales numbers on both the Wii and Xbox 360 for a month consistently.

Although this could be attributed to Wii saturation, nevertheless, it is a resounding achievement for Sony considering the history of the platforms in question and the audiences they are marketed too. Let's not forget that Nintendo pretty much dropped its hardcore, older fan base (that being those of us who remember watching the Challenger disaster and former President Regan get shot) on its collective head in favor of the family and casual deomgraphic, whereas Sony made a point to appeal to the hardcore gamer who wants to use the PS3 to its full potential and is willing to pay for it.

And lest you think I'm making this up here are some numbers for your edification:

PS3 - 24,000

Wii - 20,000
Xbox 360 - 5,100

Good to see Japan stay up there for sure, but how long can they keep it up?

How is exactly is a 4,000 console lead this week dominance?

Regardless,good numbers for the PS brand as of late.

"has been laying a whuppin' in terms of sheer sales numbers on both the Wii and Xbox 360 for a month consistently"

"PS3 - 24,000

Wii - 20,000"

Since when is 4,000 units "a whuppin"?

This just sounds like a stereotyped hardcore gamer who has a lot of pent up anger about the wii beating his favorite system so he's trying to celebrate now while he still can.
This won't last long though, the wii has a great lineup for Japan this year that will only improve as time goes on and the PS3 has........Final Fantasy 13 and..... a demo for Final Fantasy 13.

EDIT: Oh it comes from a PS3 fansite, well thats obvious...

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

C'mon Sony, 5M PS3 in japan this year!!!

"Dominance" is to strong a word for that gap lol as if, but they are doing better then MS and Nintendo, which is something to say at least.

I really wanna see hardware sales Once Versus XIII makes its debut. i bet Japans total sales will equel USA's but EU's will be the highst.

 O ya theres soooo many games for the Wii that are amazing.........

2009 Ps3 lineup-------------->2009 Wii Lineup

Nintendo didnt ditch anyone. There's plenty of hardcore games on the Wii and plenty more coming out. Gore doesnt necessarily mean MATURE.

And i'm glad Sony is doing better, but thats not "dominating"... Wii hardly has
any new games and its still selling well. Saturation? Dont make me laugh

2009 Ps3 lineup-------------->2009 Wii Lineup

The wii's lineup for Japan will sell the wii alot better than the PS3's lineup will sell the PS3. This isn't an argument about quality, it's about sales.

One game.... Wii sports resort will more than likely put paid to Ps3 dominance for the rest of this year. Then there's the small matter of Monster hunter 3g and tri plus Dragon quest 1x and x. Oh yes. FFCC too. That enough for ya?

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

Exageration apart, if this is a sign that Sony is learning from its mistakes, just like Nintendo and MS did, it will be good both for Sony and users.
