Sony Continues Japan Dominance
Posted on March 25, 2009

Sony keeps on rockin' in the Land of the Rising Microchip and Manga, Japan. We reported earlier that the Playstation 3 had outsold its competitors and happily for Sony and PS3 owners everywhere, this is a trend that seems to be continuing for the forseeable future. The latest hard ware figures to come out of Japan and specifically Famitsu is that Sony's God of Techliness (is that even a word? it is now!), has been laying a whuppin' in terms of sheer sales numbers on both the Wii and Xbox 360 for a month consistently.

Although this could be attributed to Wii saturation, nevertheless, it is a resounding achievement for Sony considering the history of the platforms in question and the audiences they are marketed too. Let's not forget that Nintendo pretty much dropped its hardcore, older fan base (that being those of us who remember watching the Challenger disaster and former President Regan get shot) on its collective head in favor of the family and casual deomgraphic, whereas Sony made a point to appeal to the hardcore gamer who wants to use the PS3 to its full potential and is willing to pay for it.

And lest you think I'm making this up here are some numbers for your edification:

PS3 - 24,000

Wii - 20,000
Xbox 360 - 5,100

Good to see Japan stay up there for sure, but how long can they keep it up?
