Forums - Gaming - Patcher: "This is the Last Console Generation"

You guys realize that a pretty hefty number of industry professionals agree with him, I hope. He didn't make this up out of thin air -- he's just assembling feedback, and providing what boils down to a pretty common sense analysis. He's said some crazy stuff in the past, but this comment is a lot closer to the truth than you may want to believe.

I agree with him, actually. Games are about money. Upping the bar makes almost no sense until pretty far in the future, relatively speaking.

There will be one more generation, but it won't be for a while, and it'll only be an incremental improvement. After that, it'll take an electronics revolution -- and I'm not talking nanotech, either.

Computational power will only get greater at the cost of more money, for some time.  That's contrary to the whole idea of a game console.

I think you're talking about a technological plateau. Think about it this way: Do you think people one hundred years back imagined something like the Playstation 3? I think there's a lot more to be discovered and a lot more space for the gaming industry to grow, more than is conceivable at this time.

I think he's talking about the foreseeable future... meaning 10 years or so only.  Beyond that is anyone's guess.

the dude always fails..I don't see why we should listen to him

I think Patcher might be right about this being the last generation of consoles. I mean, we've been playing a game since the dawn of time. It's called LIFE, and I'm happy I have one.

Yes, I don't like Pachter too but he does make a good point. Games are costing a lot, how much more "enhancements" can developers take before it is just too much money.

That's interesting.  Why would dev costs not get greater, if there's justification for a whole new generation of consoles, to begin with?  Are you suggesting that the next generation will be... the same, from a technological standpoint?

I really hate to be a pain in the ass and I'm not trying to bust your balls, but can you provide proof that a hefty amount of industry professionals agree with him? I mean, I know major publishers and developers will be supporting OnLive, but I haven't heard anyone other than Patcher predicting the doom of consoles.

Does someone really pay this Turkey?

Wedbush Morgan. And they most likely pay him entirely too much.
