Why exactly would people want that phrase to stop? The Dreamcast is looked back by most people to be a practically flawless console for it's entire lifespan where great games were plentiful and innovations ran aplenty. Christ, you could only hope when people look back on the PS3 they remember it as fondly as people remember the Dreamcast now. DC is the unfuckwitable console.

What you say is true to an extent. However it seems that when "most" people compare the ps3 to the dreamcast they do so in a different context. And that is to say that it is in last place and a failure in terms of sales.

It would be nice if more people focused on the positives as opposed to the negatives.

I'm actually looking at it in the exact same extent. How many people nowadays look at the Dreamcast as a failure as opposed to how many fondly remember it for it's awesome innovations and library? What I was getting at is even if the PS3 is seen as a failure now, being remembered like the Dreamcast could in hindsight have the console remembered for all of it's best qualities and quite possibly underrated library.

“The Dreamcast of this Generation”

I think that phrase was used by only the most rabid fanboys.

The Dreamcast was a low-cost games console launching at 199 dollars and within 8 years sold less than half the PS3 sold by 2008, so in 1 year and 8 months on the market in Europe.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

If by dreamcast of this gen you mean it is in reality the second best console of the lineup but may end up getting last place? Yup

I think the ps2 and ps3 both appeal to different audiences. The ps2 was a great all round casual gaming console that could also play dvd's. The ps3 is an expensive hard-core High Definition entertainment system. The only people who really benefit the most from it are people with massive 50 inch 1080p flatscreens with a 7.1 dolby digital surround sound setup. There aren't alot of those people around, most people are still casual with sd tv's, hense the wii taking over that area of the market.

So in conclusion. The Ps3 is doing extremely well servicing it's area of the market albeit a much smaller area of the overall gaming market. But those who fall under that category are extremely happy with their purchase. (imo etc etc :P)

LOL, dreamcast supported for 8 years...good one. No one here is arguing that PS3 is the dreamcast of the generation. I think most are arguing that PS3 is not as good... DC may have been last in sales, but games and innovations wise it was spanking anything that came after it for atleast another 3 years.

Things listed below were not offered by any other company till 2003+.

Online play

Voice chat while online play (Alien Front Online)

VGA output

Motion controls (Samba de amigo)

And while preference of games is different for everyone, people that like to push start and have fun within 2 minutes of pushing start should preffer the dreamcast library to PS3s even with the dreamcast being supported for only 2 years. People that like to talk about shaders and lighting fx and polygon counts...or watch bluray/DVDs...well they would prefer the PS2/PS3 (and to a lesser extent the 360) to a DC any day.

The Playstation 3 is not the Dreamcast of this generation. That is disrespectful to the Dreamcast.

The Playstation 3 is the Sega Saturn of this generation. If the PS4 comes out, and Sony goes out of business....Then it's the Dreamcast of it's generation. But until that happens, the PS3 is the Saturn of this generation.

This!

Sega screwed itself up with the Saturn. Mistakes Sega made with that system made it underperform. Sony made lots of mistakes with the PS3 and thats what it cost them marketshare.

Dreamcast was next to a flawless gaming console. Sure it didn't have multimedia capabilities such as DVD, (but I could play SVCD's on it if I wanted to) but in 2 years it game us more memorable games than any of the consoles did in the same amount of time this gen (360 comes close).

If sony does everything right with the PS4, but no one is buying it cause they all are waiting the next Wii or Xbox...then Sony can claim to be the Dc of the generation.

If you knew your sega history you'd know just HOW much of a screw up sega saturn was and how you can not compare that to PS3. Sega Saturn was the tail end of a series of screw ups trying to upgrade the genesis. The Saturn only made a stand along version of the already available sega CD. Basically at that point, old tech.

The PS3 is merely too expensive. It is still the best console out.

It's also a nightmare to program for. It's reduced their marketshare considerably, and has turned them around from being one of the best in the biz, to being well behind in 3rd place.

The Saturn has the most similarities with the PS3.
