Forums - Gaming - The lenght of this generation

@Bobbuffalo, I agree with you that they release systems too early, right when developers are starting to use the full potential of the previous generation. The entire process starts all over again. If the consoles would just last a few more years after the developers are at full potential it would probably be a win/win for consumers and developers.

Yeah I think the same too. Sometimes I think that gens starts because the companies want to but not the customers/developers.

Correct me if I am wrong but I remember that when the SNES appeared many 3d parties were upset because they were very happy with the NES and saw the SNES somthing unecessary to do.

I won't be surprised if that was right.

When SEGA decides they want to make a next-gen successor to Sonic and the Secret Rings, they will part heaven and earth, and Nintendo shall reveal their new console.

Will it be tomorrow? Will it be 2055? Who knows?

This.

Obviously, the lowest selling console will be to first to stop selling at all, so it will get discontinued or replaced slightly before the normal 5 year old cycle.

The console that sells like hot cakes, can be sold for slightly longer than 5 years, riding the momentum.

The 5 year generations can't be broken seriously, with 10 year plans, especially not simply with "future-proof" processing power. People will get bored of every console, and the companies must show a new gimmick, that might be nextgen graphics, new input/output, new game genre directions, etc.

BTW: from ur tone i think u want to start some thing...

Lol Nintendo is wiping the floor with the competition and you expect them to release their next console 1 to 6 years earlier than the others.  Do I sense a hint of Wii being a fad?

or he was trying to be sarcastic

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I think...

Well, all the manufacturers want it to be longer. All of them, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, will be pretty happy to sit on the consoles they have right now.

That's what I think as well.

Nintendo is making enormous profits, so they won't release another console unless they really have to.
Microsoft is in front of Sony and carved out their niche, but they still have a long way to go before the 360 reaches overall profitability.
Sony has currently so many problems, they won't launch a new console anytime soon.

But that's not all there is to it, third parties also play a role. Would they embrace a new Sony or Microsoft console after the transition to this gen cost them so much money? Or would they rather use their existing engines for the current gen systems to make money instead of taking a big risk again?

I certainly hope this gen will last longer. The games get progressively more awesome the further a generation progresses. It would be nice to finally see an increased momentum without people slobbering all over a soon to be launching console. Plus... the decreasing cost would mean true increased growth for the full industry. That is what they need the most now.
