only now are decent games starting to appear and show what it can do
Personally I don't agree with the first part of that statement (and reviewers in general agree with this looking at review averages), with regard to the second part that probably has to do with your personal expectations. I digged deeper into the technology early on and I was of the opinion it would take quite some time to get the most out of the architecture. Not because it's difficult, but because it's different.
I just find it strange how Sony and the PlayStation brand has ended up in such a situation when they used to be at the top only a few years before
I look at it differently, IMO the Windows PC has lost the most ground as a gaming platform. I wasn't a console owner the previous generation, many games which in the past came out for Windows first now end up on the consoles first and many don't come out for the PC at all. Apart from Microsoft published games and some Valve games (owned by a Microsoft era millionaire) every well sold game so far got (re-)released for the PS3 as well.
Microsoft seems to have shifted more and more focuss from Windows gaming towards the XBox. Maybe you underestimated the influence Microsoft has on the gaming industry, to expect Sony to beat them so easily. Nintendo has always been a big name within the gaming industry as well, at least so far I can remember. The PS3 is still selling far better than the PS1 did taking equal timeframes, so maybe people are coming to premature conclusions regarding lifetime sales potential. IMO only entry pricing (in relation to production costs) is holding mass sales back.
