Forums - Microsoft - Is the 360 the jRPG machine this generation?

Console wise? Yes. Overall? No, DS is still slightly edging the PSP.

I don't know if this will stay though. Even as a 360 Fanboy I am well aware of the so-so sales of JRPGs on the 360. It looks like Lost Odyssey may get a sequel (we'll find out at E3 I guess) but other then that nothing is going to splash big outside of the multi platform Final Fantasy.

I also agree RPGS should be multi platform. Hell everything should outside of first party units. It's where the money is at. I think only MS has prevented that from happening (Money hatting for Mistwalker, exclusive Infinite Undiscovery and timed Star Ocean 4 and TLR).

It's just that simple.

Nah, that's the Wii. Unless we're counting handhelds...then the DS would win hands down.

Tag - "No trolling on my watch!"

For me it is, just because of LO. Haven't found as good jrpg for ds yet.

its the psp and the DS.

an if you mean console FF13 + Versus will sell more than all 360 jrpg put together.

I think silly cute characters are a huge turnoff to many western gamers.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

That is true. :(

I think the PS3 will become the king of JRPGs this generation.

in quantity? yes

in QUALITY? NO

It's real simple, all these companies are going 360 because of the bribes.

And FYI, JRPG's broke into the western market 12 years ago when FFVII hit the U.S. If that's their excuse for this crap, then that's lame.

Bribes???  Come on.  That's a little harsh.  But I do agree with your statements before the "bribes."

I think the DS and PSP are the JRPG machines this gen, but this is thread is about non-handhelds.  As a JRPG fan since the first Dragon Warrior, the 360 is NOT the JRPG machine this gen.  In fact, not one of the three current gen consoles can claim that because of the lack of quantity/quality.  All of Atlus' three 360 titles have been duds, and I've never cared for both the Star Ocean and Tales series ever.  You have Blue Dragon, but what really sticks out are Infinite Undiscovery and Lost Odessee on the 360.  Then you have the PS3.  It does have enhanced versions of Enchanted Arms and Eternal Sonata over the 360 versions.  What sticks out on the PS3 are Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles.  Those are probably the best JRPGS you can get this gen.  Then you have White Knight Chronicles just released in Japan.  Which is looking to have a lot of potential.  But this is all we really have since this gen started over three years ago.  Now, the PS3 has the potential of being the JRPG this gen if exclusive offerings such as Cross Edge, Atelier Rorona, Final Fantasy Versus, and the upcoming Shin Megami Tense games along with a potential improved version of Last Remnant pan out to be quality.  We just have to wait and see.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Without a doubt. Any JRPG fan needs a 360 this gen.

There is ( in terms of JRPG's ) 2 on Wii, 3 on PS3 and 7 on 360. It is also getting FF13 to.

In genearal RPG terms it doesnt just win tthe RPG category but is light years ahead of the Wii and PS3. WRPG + JRPG's on 360 beat Wii and PS3 together.

Strange really. Even if 360 had a crap library as ab RPG fan I would HAVE to own a 360. It would do my head in if I didnt have one.

EDIT : Biggest breath of fresh air for JRPG's in the last 7 years is Lost Odyssey. Finally a JRPG that had decent VA and script. Best JRPG intro ever as well. Bring on number 2.

Most Japanese don't like jrpgs being on the 360. Look how Square's best console game to date in a while SO4 faired in comparison to WKC and Demon's Soul on PS3 as far as sales go. Now that the PS3 outnumbers the 360 3:1 in Japan and the Wii much more than that even, you will begin to see more jrpgs headed to PS3 and Wii and much fewer headed to 360 which is probably why at this time last year MS had a big conference to announce all the jrpgs headed to the system during the year while this year there have only been some rumours that Lost Odyssey II might be coming out.

Finally, the fact that DQX is a Wii exclusive and the PS3 has two FF exclusives at least in Japan makes things even harder for the 360 to excell at this genre in the future (and judging from both sales and review scores for jrpgs already on 360, it is debatable that they have ever excelled in this genre).

One thing that could help the 360 out here would be if they could get Kingdom Hearts 3 as an exclusive on the 360, but with its reputation as the console of choice for shooters and the most violent games would Disney and / or Square really think of the 360 as their first choice for KH3? I doubt it unless some money was talking somewhere.

Heavens to Murgatoids.
